"

March 21, 1 995

To:

Mayor and Council of' the City of Ramsey, Minnesota

From: Viking Council, Boy Scouts of America
, J~iL:-President . Properties

Thank you for permitting our Boy Scout Council this opportunity to express concern
and alarm over the proposed public thoroughfare through our Rum River Boy Scout
Camp, as shown on the proposed City of Ramsey Long Range Comprehensive Plan.

The Rum River Camp has been an operating scout camp since 1957. The property
consists of about 160 acres with 1/4 mile frontage on the Rum River and about 3/8ths
mile of frontage on Trunk Highway (T.H.) #47. The camp has 5 major buildings which
are used year round by more than 15,000 scouts and leaders annually from
Minneapolis and its' Hennepin County Suburbs and much of Anoka and Isanti Counties.

In addition, the camp is used extensively by the Minneapolis YMCA, Anoka-Hennepin
.. District #11, and various church and civic youth groups in our area.

Because of its accessibility to the heavily populated Hennepin County urban and
suburban communities, its hidden river front, its magnificent coniferous forests and its
wetlands and ideal highground camping sites, the Rum River Camp is indeed a diamond
quietly nestled in your rapidly growing city.

Within those 160 acres, we train young leaders to become good stewards of the land
and good citizens in a challenging world.

We want you to know how critically important that 160-acre camp has been to
hundreds of thousands of scouts and their leaders over these past 38 years. In this
day and age when the devil is out there recruiting these precious youngsters with a
multitude of influences at every turn in the road, we would hope that your city, and
scouting's wonderful horde of volunteer families, could put their shoulders to the
wheel together, to preserve this most traditional, solidly American influence, for many
generations to come, right here in Ramsey, Minnesota.

<~

Please do come visit the Rum River Camp and let us show you why we should join
hands to preserve a treasure that is good for America and great for our precious young
leaders of tomorrow.

INVESTORS IN AND DEVELOPERS OF REAL ESTATE
