TRAILS
Many of the residents are adamant about providing multi -use
trails that transect the City. As energy concerns become more
and more evident, this makes sense.
Safety is one of the biggest problems when trail layouts are
proposed. This is a concern because unattended children are
frequent users; multiple users can cause conflicts; and motor-
ized vehicles almost never should coincide with trail routes.
At the present development level, Ramsey does have the opportunity
to provide for well designed, safe, multiple use trails. As
trails are constructed the following guidelines should be observed:
1. separation from streets and appropriate signaling where
trails cross roadway.
2. paved surface for bicycles - usually a minimum of 8 feet
wide.
3, separation of bicycles and pedestrians with attention to
barrier free trails.
4. consideration of private land owners adjacent to proposed
trails.
5. provisions for multi -use and multi - seasonal trails.
Bike Trails
Presently the City is considering Bicycle Trail Development
along County Road 7 and County Road 5. It is anticipated that
this will be accomplished in conjunction with Mn /DOT. While
there are many other roads in the City, these two seem to be
the safest for trail development. In the future, the City hopes
to be able to establish off - the -road trail systems that link
with adjacent communities and provide a variety of year -round
multi -use trails.
An additional trail recommendation is:
Trott and Ford Brook Multi - Purpose Trail System
Trott Brook, running about eight miles easterly from Elk River
to the Rum River, is proposed as one in which a minimum. of
100' of good usuable land be acquired on each side of the Brook
for its entire length. Ford Brook, running about 1 -1/2 miles
southerly from Burns Township to Trott Brook, is the other
trail proposed and would be similar to Trott Brook -- with
acquisition of 100' on each side for its entire length. This
is a great natural feature of Ramsey and should not be exploited
by developers or others., but preserved for all the residents
to use. The trails would support hiking, biking, and cross -
country skiing. In addition, the trails would be connecting
several park sites, thus helping to create a true park system.
84
