I

I

I

Russellis a small community of about 5,000 people located on the plains of west em
Kansas. Its economy was built on wheat, and bolstered by the discovery of oil in the
1920s. The Russell landscape, beyond the wide open prairie, is highlighted by miles of
limestone fence posts; the town has brick streets and several significant historic and
civic structures.

I

I

Russell had been pursuing downtown improvements for several years through the Kansas
"Main Street" program; they. felt that the time was right to begin developing plans for
their downtown streetscape. Hoisington Koegler Group was hired to develop concepts
for the downtown streetscape, and performed all work. including a community meeting
and a summary presentation, in four days in the community.

I

The concepts focuses on creating a streetscape that could only happen in Russell,
Kansas. The stone fence posts were used as community and downtown entry markers,
leading visitors to downtown from Interstate 70. The stone was used as the base for
new lights on the Main Street, with a reveal in the stone depicting an abstraction of the
wheat and oil heritage of the community. Parking lots are defined by fence posts and
wire which created a trellis for vines; these "fences" would then enclose the wide open
parking lots much like the real fences "tamed the prairie."

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

.-r;z.~~~
C;"~!Il""~"'r'. It was built around the idea that this place had opportunities that could
be found only in Russell, and the design found ways to celebrate the relationship between
the land and its people in Russell.

I

I

Downtown Russell
Streetscape Plan

Russell, Kansas

Russell Main Street, Inc.

/

Hoisingt~n Koegler Group Inc.

[1][3
(30
