SIZING

1. The required soil treatment area shall be determined by number of bedrooms for
dwellings and definition of "water usage" for other establishments.

2. The minimum soil treatment area required for any dwelling shall provide for at least
two (2) bedrooms.

3. The minimum soil treatment area required for multiple residential units shall consist of
the sum of the areas required for each individual unit.

4. Trench and bed size shall be at least as large as set forth in Table 11.

TABLE II
Required Soil Treatment Area in Square Feet of Trench Bottom

Percolation rate in Per Gallon-of Sewage Depth of Filter Material
minutes per inch Flow per day Below Distribution pipe (c)
6" 12" 18" 24"
16 to 30 1.67 335 335 270 225 205
31 to 45 2.00 400 400 320 265 240
46 to 60 2.20 440 440 355 290 265
61-120(e)

a Table II is based on a sewage flow of two hundred (200) gallons per day per bedroom and
shall be used as the basis for sizing household systems.

b. In every case, sufficient area shall be provided for at least two (2) bedrooms in
dwellings.

c. For systems other than household systems, the required treatment area shall be based
upon gallons of waste per day. The required treatment area may be reduced, for trenches
only, by the following percentages: Twenty per cent (20%) for twelve (12) inches of
filter materials below the distribution pipe; thirty-four per cent (34%) for eighteen
(18) inches; and forty per cent (40%) for twenty-four (24) inches. The filter
material shall completely encase the disposal pipes to a depth of at least two (2) inches.

d. Soil is unsuitable for standard system if percolation rate is less than one tenth (0.1)
minute per inch.

e. Special requirements for treatment units for problem soils with this percolation range.
For soils having more than 50 percent of very fine sand by weight, plus fine sand having
a particle size range of 0.05 millimeters (sieve size 270) to 0.25 millimeters (sieve
size 60), the required soil treatment area is 1.67 square feet per gallon of sewage flow
per day.

46
