I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Qualitative substrate sampling methods were utilized at three riffle sites: the intersections of Trott Brook and Highway 47, Armstrong Boulevard, and Variolite Street. Samples were gathered using a d-frame net. All sample sites were approached from downstream. The net was placed touching the substrate with the opening facing upstream. The net was held perpendicular to the flow and held there for approximately 3 minutes. As well, the substrate was scraped with the net multiple times at each site. Contents of the net were emptied into an enamel pan for sorting, recording of observations and selecting benthic macro invertebrates. The macro invertebrates were stored in an ethanol/water mixture until further examination was possible in the lab. These sampling methods are common procedures used when gathering benthic macroinvertebrates for water quality determinations (Mitchell and Stapp 1990). Table 3.
