sterilant, filter fabric, and mulch. These products may increase the longevity of the trail but also
raise the cost of construction. A boardwalk trail surface needs to be installed to cross low, wet
areas. Boardwalk crossings are expensive, approximately $30/square foot, and should therefore
be kept to a minimum. The proposed trail requires 1,420 feet of boardwalk, a total cost of
$42,600. A low maintenance trail is suited to activities such as mountain biking, horseback
riding, and snowmobiling but is not a suitable choice because it can increase erosion and
compaction. A chip-bark low maintenance trail costs approximately $7000 per mile.
Trott Brook offers many educational opportunities. Trott Brook could become an
Environmental Learning Center, providing hands-on learning and environmental problem
solving skills. Educational possibilities include ecological studies, recreational opportunities,
literature and art proje~ts, and trail maintenance activities. Special projects may include prairie
restoration, species reintroduction, and mentoring programs. Use of the trail system for
educational purposes is not limited to schools, community groups such as churches and scouting
groups can use the area for similar activities.
Schools in the Anoka-Hennepin School District had mixed reactions about using Trott
Brook for educational purposes. Overall opinions were favorable towards educational use of
Trott Brook but transportation and proximity to other natural areas would limit their use of Trott
Brook.

IX

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
