Tools such as saws,
chainsaws, and hammers may also produce undesirable sounds. However, these noises compare
to familiar road construction sounds.
A paved shoulder along the highway and signs directing trail users to the trail heads are
necessary in several locations. These paved shoulders will ensure that trail users are safe when
traveling alongside the highway or crossing to other sections of trail.

Trail Placement
The trail location requires a careful consideration of past, present, and future land uses in
the area surrounding Trott Brook. Trail development involves determining soil and water
capabilities. Certain areas, such as lowlands and steep slopes, react unfavorably to construction
related disturbances and should be avoided.
The proposed trail has been placed on the south side of Trott Brook for several reasons.
The uplands are closer to the brook on this side. The slopes of the uplands on the south side of
the brook are less severe and allow for a lowerincidence of disturbance to the natural habitats
present. Fewer crossings over saturated soils occur on this side of the brook, thus keeping
extensive lengths of costly raised boardwalk to a minimum. The proposed trail will cover a total
of 4.9 miles and approximately 1,420 feet of boardwalk.
Trott Brook can be crossed at road intersections. When the trail reaches State Highway
47, it will depart from the Trott Brook corridor. The trail will turn north along State Highway 47
toward County Road 27 through Riverwood Hills Park. The trail will then turn east to County
Road 7, which is approximately one quarter mile north of the bridge on the Rum River. The trail
will then connect with similar trails in the Rum River Central Park. The road shoulder or ditch
can be used as a trail if pavement is constructed and adequate signs are posted.
The trail will be built primarily on Zimmerman and Nymore soils. The slopes of these
soils range from 0% to 6%. Following lines of equal elevation will alleviate any problems due to
grades exceeding 6%. One segment of the trail requires crossing a drainage ditch. At this point,
the trail will have to be a raised boardwalk.
A trail along Trott Brook corridor assures the City of Ramsey a natural space for
enjoyment. Proposed zoning for the south side of the Trott Brook corridor plans for a high.
density urban development, while the north side of the brook will remain less urban with four
lots in forty acres zoning (Boos, 1996).
Wise land use planning of the undeveloped areas in the City of Ramsey have numerous
values for present day as well as for the future. The Brook helps drain surrounding land. The

11
