art adds to the feeling that this is a great place to live and work, and that people feel welcome <br /> and appreciated. Public art brings visitors to the city and has fostered business investment in <br /> their downtown area. He has observed that public art encourages people to walk around the city, <br /> to go by some of the various stores, and to interact. Public art is used to create public areas <br /> where people like to congregate, and the city created a pedestrian corridor, including various <br /> works of public art, linking their downtown to the transit station. The ultimate goal is to get <br /> people from the transit station to downtown to support local businesses. He believes that public <br /> art is especially good for families and it provides something that whole families can share and <br /> experience together. The costs of public art are minimal, but he has heard from people that don't <br /> want tax money to pay for public art because they don't care about it. The city has costs for <br /> preparing and installing annual displays and uses various grants and private participation where <br /> they can to reduce the public cost. <br /> City Staff/Arts Administrators <br /> The Planning and Economic Deployment Director in Community A believes that public <br /> art contributes to the community in a lot of different ways. The existence and support of public <br /> art is part of the strategy toward building the city's brand and contributes to its image of being an <br /> art community. The local businesses and restaurants benefit by the additional people coming to <br /> view public art and various arts events. Public art is used to tell the history of the community <br /> and recognize the diversity of current residents. Public art serves as a place maker for the <br /> community and as a way finder to such destinations as the transit station, downtown, or the <br /> community art center. She mentioned that public art is primarily looked at through the more <br /> pragmatic lens of economic development. However, she believes that public art also provides an <br /> emotional connection to the community that people want. It gives the city a uniqueness that <br /> 95 <br />
