CASE # 3

Natural Resources Inventory Discussion
By: Chris Anderson, Zoning & Recycling Coordinator

Background:

At the September meeting, Staff introduced the topic of a natural resources inventory and
inquired if the Board would be supportive of this type of study. After some discussion, the Board
approved a motion supporting a natural resources inventory for use in the comprehensive plan
update process.

Observations:

There is an array of environmental information already available, including the MLCCS, the
Greenways Study completed by the ACD, and the soon to be completed wetland functions and
values study. So, the first step of this process really should be compiling and reviewing existing
data sources to determine what information, if any, may yet be lacking and how best to obtain it.
The second phase would then be to complete an assessment of the natural resources within the
community. Assessing the natural resources will enable the City to prioritize areas of greatest
significance or importance. The final component of this study should incorporate a process in
which the City will ultimately utilize the information in the planning process or even in
restorative efforts.

Recommendation:

Staff would recommend pursuing a natural resources inventory.

EPB Action

Motion to recommend that City Council consider authorizing a natural resources inventory and
assessment.

EPB: 10/2/06
