March/April 1 2025
City of
RR"AM S-S E Y F,
RESID .. NT
Why is the City Removing E
So Many Boulevard Trees?
In Ramsey's urban areas,particularly in the City's r►
southeast quadrant,thousands of boulevard trees
enhance neighborhoods with their beauty and shade, "
p 7
while also providing benefits such as noise reduction,
traffic calming and increased property values. However,
the boulevards present challenging environments
for these trees. They are exposed to threats from stray
vehicles, damage caused by mowers and weed trimmers,
as well as harmful effects from road salt and pollutants.
Additionally, ash trees are now at risk due to the Emerald Ash Borer(EAB). `
You may have noticed that Public Works crews are removing trees in parks,
along boulevards and possibly even from your yard that are near the street.
The trees being removed from your yard are located within the 15-foot
right-of-way and have been confirmed to be infested with the EAB.This
invasive insect is responsible for killing ash trees throughout the eastern `' r
Midwest. The beetle was first discovered in Ramsey a few years ago and has #I ` f ,
since caused significant damage across the entire City. When an ash tree
becomes infected, adult beetles lay their eggs inside the tree. The trees have "'
little defense against the burrowing larvae and they typically die completely
by the second season.
Dead ash trees are notorious for their brittle limbs and dropping branches
during windy conditions. For community member safety,Public Works r' ' p r ►'.
crews continue to remove dead and infected ash trees in areas with the
greatest concern for people being hit by falling limbs—especially boulevard
trees over the sidewalks and in parks. t
The City will increase its boulevard tree planting program in 2025. Still, vu
unfortunately, for the next few years, ash trees will be removed from the '
City's landscapes faster than they can be replaced.
More information about EAB is available on the City's website at +'
www.cityoframsey.com/282.For additional details or questions on _
boulevard tree care and replacements, contact Parks&Assistant PublicIr
`1
Works Director Mark Riverblood at mriverblood@cityoframsey.com or
763-433-9853.
