Background:
PC CASE # 1
Consider Resolution Accepting the Resignation of an Employee and
Authorizing Staff to Fill the Resulting Vacancies
By: Givonna Reed Kone, Human Resources Manager
Mr. Robert Kuhn began employment with the City of Ramsey as a Patrol Officer on
January 1, 1979. He was assigned to the position of Sergeant on June 10, 1997. On
October 5, 2006, Mr. Kuhn submitted a letter of resignation indicating that he would
retire from the City of Ramsey on February 1, 2007. Staff is recommending that Mr.
Kuhn's resignation be accepted by the City Council and that staff be authorized to fill the
resulting vacancies.
Staff has conducted an internal recruitment process to fill the Sergeant position that will
be vacant as of February 2, 2007 as a result of Mr. Kuhn's retirement. Two patrol
officers applied for- and were interviewed for - the Sergeant position. The Police Chief
recommends that Sheldon Erdman be hired as a Patrol Sergeant effective February 2,
2007.
Staff has also begun the process of conducting an internal recruitment process to fill the
patrol officer position that will be vacant when, pending City Council approval, Mr.
Sheldon Erdman is promoted to Sergeant. Pending the approval of Mr. Erdman's
promotion to Sergeant and after the completion of the internal recruitment process to fill
the position left vacant by Mr. Erdman, staff will return to the City Council with a request
for authorization to hire the selected individual.
As members of the City Council are aware, there is currently one patrol officer position
included in the 2007 budget. With City Council approval, staff would like authorization
to create an eligibility list for this position. If authorization is granted, staff will begin an
internal recruitment process and upon adoption of the 2007 budget staff will return to the
City Council with a request for authorization to hire the selected individual.
Staff Recommendation:
Staff recommends the following committee actions:
Committee Action:
1. Motion recommending that the City Council accept Mr. Robert Kuhn's
resignation/retirement from his position as Patrol Sergeant effective February
1, 2007.
C:\Documents and Settings \pmiller\Local Settings \Temporary Internet Files \OLK618\auth to accept resignation- hire Patrol Officer - Elig List.doc
-317-
