NEWS FROM PARK
DEPARTMENT

In the fall of 1990, 2 additional softball fields
and a soccer field were completed at Central
Park, each of them irrigated. Volunteers,
including RYAA members and then
Council member AI Pearson, put the finishing
touches of grass seed and fertilizer on the fields
and completed preliminary grading of the infield
lime; the Youth Athletic Association is assisting
us in scheduling these fields to minimize
damage to the newly established grass. The
grass is coming along quite nicely. This spring
your park department will be fertilizing at
Central Park, final grading the infields (fields #5
and #6) and also installing home plates and
players benches on these fields.
What the heck does the Park Department
do all winter? Well. . . . , in addition to building
maintenance and repairs, snow removal on
roads, walks, and rinks, rink sweeping and
flooding, tree trimming and removal, play
equipment safety inspections and repairs, utility,
street and other tasks, we also create time and
labor saving innovations for our operations.
In between ordinary duties earlier this
spring, our newest park maintenance worker,
James Lacey, designed and built a hydraulic
ballfield drag. This simplifies infield
maintenance by several minutes per field (more
than a dozen fields, twice a week). The
invention saves not only time but also "wear
and tear' on equipment and turf. The
contraption is carried on the regular mowing
trailer, is self loading, and on and off in
seconds. This increases safety, and wear and
tear on 01' Jim.

When planning family picnics or reunions for
this summer you may wish to consider Central
Park. Water sports aren't a big draw there but
the 45 acre park does contain athletic fields, a
volley ball net, horseshoe pits, grills, tables, and
a picnic shelter.
To reserve park buildings or playing fields,
simply call Mark Boos at 427-1741 or 427-1410.
Hope you have a nice spring!!
RECYCLING UPDATE FOR APRil, 1991

by Jim Gromberg
In the table below, the weight of materials recycled in the curbside program for March 1991 are
compared to February 1991. All weights and changes are listed in pounds.

Material March February Change
Weight Weight
Glass 17,420 15,620 + 1,800
Newspaper 34,900 44,540 -9,640
Plastic 3,040 2,900 +140
Metal Cans 5,640 6,260 -B20
Total 61,000 69,320 -8,320
+ indicates an increase
- indicates a decrease

As you can see, the City amounts of recycled materials are declining. The City has currently
recycled 204,540 pounds of materials in the City Wide Curbside Recycling Program. With the City
being one quarter of the way through the year, the city could expect to recycle 818,160 pounds for
1991. The City's goal for 1991 is 1,210,000 pounds. The City needs to have 400,000 pounds to
additionally to reach this goal.
The participation rate for the City Wide Curbside Recycling Program is up to 58% for the month
of March. Even with this increase of resident participation, the program is still recycling a lower
weight of material. This decrease may be caused by residents taking advantage of the local drop-
ofts operated by community service groups. These materials collected by community service
groups are reported to the City and credited to the recycling goal. If you are taking your materials
to drop-off locations outside of Ramsey, please bring your receipts for the materials to City Hall so
the City can record the materials toward the recycling goal.

The recycling dates for May are:

Western of the City
Eastern of the City

May 6th & 20th
May 13th & 28th

The pick-up for the 4th Monday will be done on Tuesday due to Memorial Day.
