DUAL LEARNING IS THE GOAL

OF THE ANOKA SENIOR HIGH

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

The Anoka Senior High Preschool Program helps high school
students enrolled in Child Development and Child Care Oc-
cupation classes gain insight into the growth of young
children, and gives the students an opportunity to apply
classroom learning as they observe and interact with the
preschoolers.
For the preschoolers it is hoped that this will provide them
with a variety of experiences with children their own age and
to help them relate successfully with these children.
The preschool program is set up for ages 4-5 and meets
three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday,Thursday) for 2112
hours and runs through the school year. There are two ses-
sions: 8:00-10:30 and 11 :30-2:00. For more information,
contact Joan Copa 422-5728
RAMSEY SENIOR CITIZENS

CLUB

On September 5th, 32 Ramsey Seniors enjoyed a potluck
luncheon at the Senior Center in the Ramsey Municipal
building. The Ramsey Seniors hadn't met at their regular
meeting center for two months; the July meeting was a pic-
nic that was rained out and the August meeting date fell on
Seniors Day at the County Fair.
Anoka County Commissioner Natalie Hass Steffen attend-
ed the September meeting to give a presentation on solid
waste issues including how to dispose of your waste respon-
sibly, back yard composting, curbside recycling. Natalie also
reported that the Anoka County Traveler, a new public tran-
sit service, is doing well. For only $1.00, the Anoka County
Traveler will provide transportation form your front door to
anywhere in Anoka County. The County Traveler is spon-
sored by the Anoka County Board of Commissioners and the
Regional Transit Board.
Florence and Harold Hunt were elected Ramsey Senior King
and Queen and will represent Ramsey in this year's annual
Anoka Halloween Parade.
The next potluck luncheon meeting of the Ramsey Seniors
will be Wednesday, October 3 at the Ramsey Municipal
Center. Winston Granger of the Senior Federation has been
scheduled to talk to the group about living wills.
If you are interested in joining the Ramsey Senior Citizens
or would like more information, please call Mary Guentzel
at 421-6002.
NEW TRANSIT SERVICE

AVAILABLE IN

ANOKA COUNTY

One of the first comprehensive shared-ride services of its
kind in the United States began service in Anoka County
recently.
Called the" Anoka County Traveler" (Traveler) this new
service is Minnesota's first county-wide, locally coordinated
door-to-door public transit service to operate for the general
public. It is sponsored by the Anoka County Board of Com-
missioners and the Regional Transit Board.
The service is unique because it was created for everyone
- regardless of age, income or mobility restrictions; there
are no eligibility requirements. The goal is to provide transit
opportunities for everyone: Teenagers, commuters, senior
citizens, youth, college students and parents.
Morley Bus Company of Forest Lake, the service provider,
purchased and is running seven new deluxe, air-conditioned
minibuses for the Traveler. Each minibus is equipped with
a wheelchair lift and is accessible to the disabled.
For about one dollar residents can go anywhere within 19
communities served in Anoka County. (Service to Columbia
Heights, Fridley and Hilltop is proposed to be added in 1991.)
The start-up hours for the Traveler in several Anoka County
communities are from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the week;
there are shorter hours on the weekends. Residents can call
the Anoka County Traveler hotline at 422-7075 for informa-
tion about the specific service hours in the various Anoka
County communities.
One call to 464-8883 - made at least 24-hours in advance
- is all it takes to request a ride on the Traveler. This phone
is also a TTYITDY phone number for the hearing-impaired.
The door-to-door shared ride service is available to help
make residents of Anoka County more independent. For ex-
ample, residents can take the Traveler to shopping centers,
to movie theatres, to appointments, to entertainment spots,
to places of employment, to sports games, to school and
many other places. In fact, the Traveler will take riders just
about anywhere in Anoka County. It also provides a link to
other transit services in the area - such as the North Subur-
ban Bus Lines and the Metropolitan Transit Commission
(MTC) bus lines.
Coon Rapids resident, Eileen Schefelbein, started using
the Traveler right away. "It has helped me enormously!"
she said. "I don't drive so I need transportation to go to
doctor appointments, shopping and the library...Now I can
be indenpendent."
"This new service is unbelievable," said Karen Bryd, an
Andover resident who is employed at Mercy Hospital and
takes the Traveler to work. "Many of my friends use the
Traveler, too. Now they can go to the grocery store, to the
beauty shop and even to the homes of other friends - without
having to bother other people for rides."
The Traveler is a 17-month pilot program to test the ser-
vice needs of the County. The program goal is to provide
at least 144,000 one-way rides during that time. The Regional
Transit Board will make the final decision about continuing
the program beyond 1991.
For more information about this new transit service, call
the Traveler hotline at 422-7075.
