RAMSEY ELEMENTARY

PROMOTES "DRUG FREE

IS THE WAY TO BE"

October 22 through October 26 was declared drug and
alcohol awareness week by the State of Minnesota. A red
ribbon campaign was launched throughout the state to pro-
mote the theme" Drug Free Is The Way To Be." Throughout
the week at Ramsey we were able to provide our students
with a broad base of experiences. Before the week had even
begun, Mrs. Christianson had the students make Drug Free
Is The Way To Be posters and these were hung throughout
the building. Monday morning began with a banner parade
around the building and a flag raising ceremony in which
one student from each class was chosen to participate. We
hung the red flag and decorated the school with red ribbons
as a way ~~ symbolize our commitment to promoting drug
free activities.
Each teacher was responsible for providing their students
with many discussions and activities regarding drug and
alcohol use and responsible decision making. In addition,
each third and fourth grade class was visited by a group of
high school students that have been trained to teach alcohol
and safety-responsible decision making through a 4-H pro-
gram. All the high school students had been selected by their
teachers as students leaders and truly represented
themselves well. Our students thought they were great and
they set a wonderful example for them. Also throughout the
week each first and second grade room was visited by Carol
Redburn our school social worker. Carol talked with them
about making choices and practicing how to "Just Say No".
All was topped off on Thursday with Ramsey Red Day. All
the students and staff wore red clothing; ribbons, buttons
and even socks!
Posters of Hershal Walker and The Jets were raffled off
in some classes. Red ribbons and stickers with drug free
slogans were given to each child. The week was a whirl-
wind of activity, our students learned alot and as always,
the Ramsey teachers deserve a round of applause for a job
well done!
NEWS FROM YOUR
VOLUNTEER FIRE
DEPARTMENT

The Ramsey Fire Department responded to a total of 22 fire
calls from the first of October through the 11th of November.
Most of the calls were either false alarms or small fires that
were already under control. One firefighter, Lt. Jay Guimont,
suffered multiple fractures in his left leg when a rear tire blew
during a bus fire at American Trade-A-Bus on Sunfish Lake
Blvd. Other than that, the fires we had were handled without
incident.
Also we're getting into the "wood burning" season! So let
us take this opportunity to remind everyone to have those
Chimneys cleaned. A thorough check of your smoke detec-
tors wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Also, we would like to mention that the wives of the Ramsey
Firemen have started an auxilliary for support of and fun-
draising for the Ramsey Fire Dept. The first fundraiser that
is planned is a bake sale at the Anoka County Courthouse
on the 21st of November from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. They
will also be selling refreshments at craft sale on November
30th from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. This will be held at the Anoka
City Hall.
If you have a benefit or fund raiser that the RFD Ladies Aux-
illiary can participate in please contact either: Tori Guimont
(427-9827) or Barb McKusick (427-0444)
RAMSEY FIRE DEPARTMENT
PROMOTES NATIONAL FIRE WEEK

The Ramsey Voulunteer Fire Department would like to take
this opportunity to thank all of the establishments and per-
sonnel that assisted in the recognition of National Fire Week.
The Ramsey Fire Department spent the week at various ac-
tivities including fire safety classes for daycare students. The
fire safety presentations included teaching children the basic
stop, drop and roll technique, followed by a tour of the fire
station house. The children thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the
fire trucks, trying on firefighting gear, hearing the sirens blow
and best of all, actually shooting water from a fire hose.
Any other groups or organizations that are interested in
hosting a fire prevention awareness class and/or a tour of
the station house should please call Dale McKusick at
427-0444. It's fun for the children, as well as the firefighters,
and serves as a tool that may save a life.

Fire Captian Tom Hoxter supervises practicing the stop, drop
and roll technique.

The Tender Touch Car Wash located just north of the new
day through Saturday, and 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sun-
days. The only exceptions to this schedule are for inclement
weather or equipment problems. (In the case of heavy
snowfall or temperatures below -10 degrees, the facility does
close early).
On Saturday, November 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,
Clayton and Kathy will be offering special reduced prices and
free coffee and cookies to introduce the public to the most
CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM ACHEIVES OVER
60 PERCENT PARTICIPATION IN NOVEMBER

The Ramsey City-wide curbside recycling program achieved over 60 percent participation for the first two weeks of the month
of November. This participation rate was achieved even with the gliches that occur in a new program during the early stages
of implementation. Residents need to follow the map and calendar shown below for the dates of pickup in their neighborhoods.
If you find that your neighborhood was missed, please contact the Ramsey Municipal Center at 427-1410 the first thing Tues-
day morning following your pick-up date.
The biggest problem facing the City and the hauler is that the materials are not prepared correctly. The hauler, if time per-
mits, will do some limited curbside sorting however, this slows down the recycling crew and is an additional cost for the
program. One of the biggest problems with the preparing of the material is leaving the caps and lids on glass and plastic
containers. Please follow the instructions listed below for preparing your materials. If you have questions concerning preparing
material, your recycling days or any questions concerning the program please contact the Ramsey Municipal Center at 427-1410.

NEWSPAPER
Ne.wspapers should be put in a grocery bag and placed on top of the recycling container. Please, no magazines; catalogs;
shiny, glossy paper; or cereal boxes.

METAL & ALUMINUM CANS
Metal cans should have labels removed, flattened, rinsed, and placed in a grocery bag in the recycling container. Please
no paint cans or aerosol containers. '

GLASS
Glass should have labels, lids and metal rings removed, be rinsed, and placed in a grocery bag in the recycling container.
Each color glass (green, clear and brown) should be placed in a separate grocery bag. Do not break glass containers. Please,
no window glass, plate glass or light bulbs.

PLASTIC BOTTLES
Plastic milk, water, juice, and pop bottles should have labels, lids and rings removed, be flattened and rinsed, and placed
in a grocery bag in the recycling container. Most plastic containers with the following symbol are recyclable.

[&]

The following containers may carry this symbol, however they are not recyclable; oil jugs,
antifreeze or windsheild washer bottles. If you have questions please contact Ramsey Municipal Center at
