RAMSEY PILOT RECYCLING
PROGRAM UPDATE

Ramsey's pilot recycling program had it's first
pick-up on Friday, November 4. The participation
rate was 35-40 percent, which is very good for the
first pick-up of the program. The City will continue
to monitor the program to see if any changes are
necessary to increase the success of the program.
The City is encouraging the residents in the pilot
areas to participate in the program and to call Jim
Gromberg at 427-1410 if they have any problems
with or questions concerning the program.
YOUR TRASH AND MINE:

WHAT IS THE FUTURE?

Trash. Garbage. Refuse. Garbage has gotten alot of press
lately -- but what are the real facts? How much garbage do
we generate? How much garbage do Anoka County residents
recycle? VVhat happens to our garbage when it leaves our
curb? VVhat is the future in relation to what we will have to
be doing to our garbage? A public informational meeting will
be held on these topics VVednesday, November 30, 1988
from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Anoka County Courthouse Board
Room in Anoka. Guest speakers are State Senator Gene Mer-
riam; Anoka County Commissioner Paul McCarron; Norm
Schiferl, Anoka County Solid VVaste Coordinator; and Trish
A WORD FROM YOUR
TREE INSPECTOR
By Bruce Bacon

Dear Citizens:

As you remember, this summer's drought severely im-
pacted Ramsey's urban forest, especially the pine planta-
tions. The dead pines need to be removed this winter so
they do not serve as a host tree for the ips bark beetle popula-
tion, which will move to adjoining healthy trees. Thinning
pine stands is recommended.
Please remember, this winter is a good time to accomplish
maintenance and aesthetic (shaping) pruning. There is an
excellent reprint on the literature counter at Ramsey City Hall
on correct pruning practices and tree physiology and wound
healing. Pick one up next time you are there.
Brush can be transported to the Anoka County tree disposal
site and yard waste composting site on Hanson Blvd. Limbs
larger than 4" to 6" in diameter should be recycled as
firewood or campfire fuel, used or given away.
The Landfill Commission and Urban Forestry sponsorship
of a mobile chipping project has completed 3'/2 days of chip-
ping, serving 28 residents thus far. The program intends to
abate the woody brush faction to the waste stream by con-
verting it to usable chips on the site of generation. Chipping
also takes care of bark beetles and fungus diseases. Chips
can be recycled as mulch for trees, or landscaping. The im-
portance of decreasing open burning for air quality reasons
and fire safety reasons is also accomplished.
RECYCLE, RECYCLE, RECYCLE

There, you just said it three times and it was easy. You
know what is even easier than saying RECYCLE three times?
Actually participating in recycling. Your part is simple, all
you have to do is collect cans, bottles and newspapers. Hey,
just have a couple of brown paper sacks near your normal
garbage, and whenever there are recyclables generated in
your household, toss them into one of the sacks--it's so sim-
ple. Once the sacks are full, take them to one of Ramsey's
seven reCYCling centers.
Come on, play your part in Keeping Ramsey Beautiful.
Remember, it is so easy. If you want to talk recycling, just
give the Ramsey Recycling Hotline a.call at 427-1410. VVe
will be happy to listen and give answers. RECYCLE, RECY-
