THE NORTHERN BANK

The bank, chartered in 1892, operates three
facilities, two in Anoka and one at 167th Avenue
N.W. and Hwy. #47 in Ramsey. Plans are currently
underway for expanding the Ramsey facility. The
Northern Bank is the only locally owned and
operated financial institution serving Ramsey and
Anoka and has over 70 million dollars in assets. The
bank maintains a loan portfolio in excess of
$45,000,000; nearly all to customers located within
10 miles of its' Ramsey office.
Nearly 40% of the banks loans are to business
and industry. Millions have been lent in Ramsey for
commercial buildings, lot development, small
manufacturing, start-up loans and expansion of ex-
isting businesses. The bank is current processing
several large SBA loans, several small cities 504
loans, lot development and building expansion loans
in Ramsey. As an accredited SBA lender, the bank
has the ability to originate all sizes of loans and ser-
vice to its' customers as they expand.
The bank has 18 employees in their 10th year or
longer of employment and 10 in their 20th year or
longer. These key people own and run the bank. A
unique aspect is that nearly 75% of the holding com-
pany is owned by individuals with a 55303 zip code.
Also unique is that virtually all of the remainder of
the holding company is owned by an Employee
Stock Ownership Plan consisting of more than 35
employees of the Northern Bank and its' sister bank
the Northern National Bank of Forest Lake.
IRON WORKS GYM

What began as a sweat shop in the basement of
an Anoka creamery in 1983 has grown into a family
workout center located in Ramsey.
the Iron Works Gym had potential from the begin-
ning, but founder Curt Kummala wanted to find just
the right place for his business expansion. An ex-
tensive demographics study of the metro area led
Kummala to his long-time residence n Ramsey!
Why? Iron Works' target market is the upper mid-
dle class blue and white collar workers and their
families. Kummala recognized the tremendous
population growth potential in Ramsey.
Now, what started as a 5,000 square foot facility
in 1983 on Sunfish Lake Blvd., moved into a 12,500
square foot facility across the street at 14100 Sun-
fish Lake Blvd. That facility soon expanded to 20,000
square feet with the addition of a pool and racquet
ball course. And it's not stopping there -- plans are
being considered to add another 5,000 square feet
to accommodate a nursery, cardio-vascular room
and pro shop.
The facility, managed by Mike Kopiecki, employs
a full-time and 5 part-time instructors.
According to Curt, he has not regretted locating
in Ramsey. He says "The friendly people of Ramsey
make it a great place to live and run a business.
