A WORD FROM YOUR

TREE INSPECTOR

By: Bruce Bacon

How do you spell efficiency?

Here are seven hints.

C Cycles in nature are common and costly to
ignore.
o Oak Wilt is an epidemic.
M Metro landfills impact groundwater quality and
burning impacts air quality.
P Pruning, planting and maintenance shape the
future for Ramsey's Urban Forest.
o Organic content provides plant nutrition and
changes dirt into soil.
S Soil is a resource.
T Tree, garden, yard, lawn wastes are organic and
biodegradable.

The Minnesota Extension Service, Department of
Soil Science, has produced a new pamphlet entitl-
ed "Composting and Mulching: A Guide To Manag-
ing Organic Yard Wastes", AG-FO-3296. This pam-
phlet is available at no charge and can be found on
the front counter at Ramsey City Hall or by calling
the Bunker Hills Activity Center at 755-1280.

JAYCEES URGE RESIDENTS
TO BEGIN RECYCLING

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS
WASTE COLLECTION

The Ramsey Jaycees in conjunction with Waste
Management of Minnesota, Inc. maintain a recycl-
ing center at the Anoka Regional Sanitary Landfill.
The center is open during landfill operating hours
Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Satur-
days, 8:00 a.m. to 1 :00 p.m.
Containers are provided for newspaper and
metals. Newspapers should be bagged, boxed or
bundled. Items exclusively made of metal are ac-
cepted. No appliances, drums, household garbage
or combination of metal and other materials are ac-
ceptable for recycling at this time.
Residents are urged to start recycling now. Any
proceeds from the recycling center are turned over
to the Ramsey Jaycees to be used for community
service projects.
The Ramsey Jaycees are currently seeking new
members. For information, contact Terry Miller,
President, at 421-0540 days or 427-0878 evenings,
or contact any Jaycee member. The Jaycees meet
at 7:30 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of the
month at Ramsey City Hall. The public is welcome
to attend.

There are many hazardous wastes in your home
that, if disposed of improperly, could end up in our
water supply and endanger our health. To assist in
identifying and properly managing these wastes,
Ramsey is making plans to include Household
Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection as part of the an-
nual Ramsey cleanup day tentatively scheduled for
April 30th. A booth will be set up at the entrance to
the Ramsey Landfill for any HHW that you have col-
lected from your house. If you have any household
wastes that are hazardous, or any you think might
be hazardous, bring them in. Someone will be
available to answer your questions and determine
if the wastes can be reused or recycled or if they are
hazardous. Any HHW will be collected for proper
disposal. Recyclable materials will also be collected.
Household Hazardous Wastes include items such
as:
- Building and painting chemicals
- Garden pesticides and weed killers
- Household cleaning chemicals
- Automotive supplies, and
- Hobby and craft chemicals.
The time to start looking for those hazardous
wastes is now.
- Check your basement, kitchen and garage for pro-
ducts that you no longer need, or do not plan to use.
- Try to give leftovers to someone else who can use
them.
- Recycle used motor oil and auto batteries.
- Keep products in their original containers, if
possible.
- Do not mix chemical wastes together.
You can recieve further information on managing
household hazardous wastes by calling the Min-
nesota Pollution Control Agency at 296-6300.
Of course the best way to manage HHW is to buy
only as much as needed and use non-hazardous
alternatives whenever possible.
