that there is a correlation be-
tween what we eat ,and the risk
of developing certain kinds of
cancer," said Jacqueline
Society recently released
dietary guidelines, recommen-
dations to help reduce cancer.
risks':
1. Cut down on total fat
2. Cut down on salt-cured,
smoked and nitrite-cured
foods
3. Eat more high fiber foods
4. Include foods rich in
vitamins A and C in your daily

diet
5. Include cruciferous vege-
tables in your diet
6. Keep alcohol consump-
tion moderate, if you do drink
7. Avoid obesity."
Two booklets are available
with more detailed informa-
tion about healthy food
choices, according ,to Jacque-
line, "Nutrition Puts the Bit On
Cancer", published by the
American Cancer Society,

Minnesota Division, and "Diet,
Nutrition and Cancer Preven-
tion", published by the Na-
tional Cancer Institute. The
booklets may be ordered by
calling the toll free Cancer In-
formation Service, 1-800-4-
CANCER.
"We can begin the battle
against cancer right in our kit-
chens," said Jacqueline. "Eat-
ing smart to stay healthy
doesn't mean we have to give

up our favorite foods. It just
means we can make more in-
formed food choices, choose
more foods that are good for
us and cut down on others.
The American Cancer Society
is actively supporting research
on nutrition as it relates to
cancer and will continue, to
keep us informed as more is
learned about cancer preven-
Area Job Service Assists 279 Applicants

During the month of Sep-
tember, Job Service offices' in
Anoka County assisted 279 job
seekers in finding employ-
ment. During the same period
Job Service offices assisted
191 Anoka County employers
in filling job openings. Since
some jobs are temporary in
nature, the offices may have
helped one person find more
than one job during the period
and some applicants are plac-

ed in jobs outside of ,Anoka
County.
Job Service offers employ-
ers the largest single source
of job ready workers in the
state at no fee to employers or
appl icants.
Although efforts are made
primarily in placing job appli-,
cants in full time permanent
positions, Job Service also
helps school age youth in the
job market thru the "Dial-a-Job

Program": A list of youth seek-
ing work is matched with
openings available frombusi-
nesses or private households
for jobs such as raking leaves,
snow shoveling, and work of
that nature.
The Coon Rapids Job Ser-
vice office provides services'
to employers and job appli-
cants in Anoka County and
surrounding areas. Placement
staff are also located at the
Reducing Heating Costs

Heating season is here!
Consider the following tips to
help you cut energy costs this
winter; .
Understand R-Value. The ef-
fectiveness of any type of in-
sulation is measured by the "R-
Value". R-Value represents the
resistance to the passage of
heat. The higher the R-Value,
the more effective the insula-
tion. R-44 is recommended for
attic floors or top floor ceil-
ings. R-22 to R-19 is recom-
mended for exterior walls and

0;

floors over unheated areas.
Time to Caulk? Try the can-
die trick. Move a candle flame
around the frame and sashes
of your windows. (Of course,
get curtains and other flam-
mable materials out of the
way, first!) If the flame flick-
ers, get to work!
The Coin Trick. If you can
slip a quarter under an out-
side door easily, you need to
weatherstrip.
Rules of Thumb. Here's how

to estimate how much caulk
you'll need: half a cartridge per
window or door, four cartridg-
es for a foundation sill, two
cartridges for a two story
chimney. Always caulk when
it's above 40 degrees. Only ap-
ply to clean surfaces. Remove
old dried caulk and paint first.
Use Convenient Clock Ther-
mostats to turn the heat
down automotically before
you go to bed and turn it back
up again in the morning. Snug-

Iish. It also trains volunteers to
teach reading to non-reading
adults.
Anyone interested in be-
coming a student, or in finding
out about volunteering, call
Metro North Adult Education,
755-6835.

gle under an extra wool blank-
et or a down comforter for
warmth.
Raise the Humidity, be-
cause a properly humidified
house is as comfortable-at 68
degrees as a dry one at 75
degrees.
home weatherization, contact
ment at Anoka Electric Coop-
