Anoka Hennepin School
. District 11 was represented by
two musical groups at the Min-
nesofa Music Educators
Association Midwinter In-ser-
vice Clinic Feb. 22 at the Ord-
way Music Theatre, St. Paul.
Both the Fred Moore Junior
High Scl]ool Concert Band
and the Anoka High School
Concert Choir were selected
to perform for music educa-
tors from throughout the state.
Bands, choirs and orchestras

asked to participate were
selected by a panel of judges
who heard audition tapes sub-
mitted by many junior and
senior high musical groups
from aroul1d the state.
It is not often that a single
school district is represented
by more than one musical
group, according to Arthur
Schoenoff, music education
consultant for the school dis-
t ri ct.
"Both groups gave superb

performances; certainly ones
both the school district and
parents can be proud of," said
Schoenoff. "Thei r perform-
ances were representative of
the quality of music education
programs throughout our dis-
trict."
. Schoenoff said he was
. pleased with "the dedicated
efforts that were displayed by
students and teachers in both
groups."
The Fred Moore Concert

band, under the direction of
Peter Dahlstrom and Gordon
Nilsen performed a variety of
classical and popular works in-
cluding "Brighton Beach",
concert march for band by
William Latham, the aria
"When Thou Art Near" by J.S.
Bach, songs from the Roaring
Twenties arranged by Jenn-
ings, and a medley from "Ser-
geant Pepper's Lonely-Hearts
Club Band" by John Lennon'
and Paul McCartney.

The Anoka High School
Concert Choir, directed by
Bruce Phelps, sang selections
such as "Jesu, Meine Freude"
by J.S. Bach and "We are Com-
ing. Father Abraam" by
Stephen Foster. In addition,
they were led by Weston No-
ble, Luther College guest clini-
cian, in "Before the Marvel of
this Night" by Carl Schalk and
"And the Father Will Dance"
by Mark Hayes.
National Vocational Education Week

. National Vocational Educa-
tion Week was observed in
Anoka-Hennepin School Dis-
trict 11 Feb. 10 through 16.
Some 5,000 students are en-
rolled in vocational education
programs in the district's
schools. Through these pro-
grams they learn entry level
skills and explore career op-
portunities in a wide variety of
fields -- horticulture, health,
accounting, data processing,
machine trades, sales, and
many more.
Approximately half of Min-
nesota high school graduates
receive no formal education or
training~ after high school.
About 32 percent of graduates
go directly into the work force.
Students who have gone
through high school vocation-
al programs have better
chances of getting good jobs
than those who haven't, ac-
cording to Gerrie Driessen,
secondary vocational consul-
tant.
Secondary vocational pro-

I
"

grams in the school district
have a threefold purpose
~-career exploration, entry level
skill development and advanc-
ed placement in a post-secon-
dary vocational program if the
student decides. to continue
education in that field at a
vocational institute.
In addition to learning the
basic skills necessary for a
job, students develop some-
thing equally as important -- a
good work attitude.
"The development of a good
work attitude is probably the
most basic skill students can
learn," ~aid Driessen.
Students learn these atti-
tudes through work experi-
ence in a number of vocational
cooperative education pro-
grams offered in the high
schools.
Students in these programs
attend school and then work in
a specific fjeld, earning credit
for their experience. Coopera-
tive programs give students
the chance to tryout careers
Swing Honored by
School Board

Bonnie Swing, a secretary in
Anoka-Hennepin School 'Dis-
trict 11 for over 30 years, was
honored by the School Board
for her contribution to stu-
dents and staff Feb. 14,
Mrs. Swing was first em-
ployed in the school district in
1952. She took some time off
when her. daughter was born
and then returned to her posi-
tion.
"Not only has her service
been of long standing, but it
has been of an outstanding na-
ture," said Janet Davenport,
goyernmentallpubl ic relations
director. "She has done so
much for the students and
staff of Anoka High School."
Most of her time in the
school district has been as
secretary to Art Dussl, Anoka
High School principal. "She
has been my sidekick for 25
years. When someone asks me
a question I say, 'Here is the.
boss ask her'," said Dussl.
School board member Betty
Hardie recalled that she was a
student at Anoka High School
when Mrs. Swing started work-
ing there. "I think she ran the
school then," said Hardie.

"Nothing's changed," re-
sponded Dussl. .
A number of Anoka High
School staff were on hand to
congratulate Mrs. Swing.
"They wanted to come tonight
because they said Bonnie is
someone we love and respect
at Anoka High School and we
want to be part of any plaudits
she gets," said Davenport.
Mrs. Swing told the school
board she is happy to be "part
of a great school family."
She was further recognized
by being named WCCO Good
Neighbor Feb. 16.

Bonnie Swing is congratulated by
School Board chairman Larry John.
son.

in health, home economics re-
lated areas such as restaurant
work or child care, trade and
industry, sales and office
areas.
Another advantage of voca-.
tional education programs is
the opportunity they present
to teach related academic sub-
jects -- math., science, com-
munication skills -- in a mean-
ingful setting.
"Students may think they
don't need to learn math, for
example, because they are
planning to work in a machine
shop," said Driessen. "But
they find out that they need to
know how to do math in order
to do the job. They learn math
as a part of that program and
they see that It has rea' prac-
tlca' app,'catIon.
