Are we growing? Get-
ting new businesses? New in-
dustries? More housing?"
In the late seventies, Elk
River experienced unprec-
endented growth in housing,
as did many areas in 'Minn-
esota and in the United
States. In the early eighties,
with the economy falling into
troublesome times, our hous-
ing starts fell accordingly.
While Elk River has had con-
tinued growth at a slower rate
than in the late seventies, we
have noticed in the past two
years that the growth is begin-.
ning to accelerate slightly.
In 1983, the City issued 66
building permits for new
single family and multiple
family dwellings and to date,
in 1984 the City has issued 76
permits for new single family
and multiple family dwellings.
The number of housing starts
to date for Elk River is en-
couraging and seems to in-
dicate that we.will significant-
ly exceed the .1983 total.

In the area of commercial
and business development,
the City has seen some activi.
ty in the last several years, but
certainly not a major growth
surge. Notable additions to
the community in the last few
years are McDonald's and
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Restaurants, Tescom Corpor-
ation and several small
ma,nufacturing concerns.
Now, in the process of being
constructed are the Prairie
House Restaurant and a com-
bination food and fuel, laun-
dromat and truck/car wash in
Barrington Place Addition.
Also, the City has seen the
growth and expansion of
several existing businesses,
most notably, Alltool, Inc. and
Roma Tool in the City's In-
dustrial Park which is very ex-
citing for the City.
Over the past year, a
number of, other commercial
projects have been discussed
but little has come of these
developments. The City is op-
timistic, however, th.at very
soon we will see the beginn-
ing of construction' on a shop- .

ping center south of School
Street and west of Highway
No. 169 that wi II provide at
least 55,000 square feet of
shopping mall, 'another fast
food restaurant, and possibly
a satellite bank. The shopping
center project is also likely to
include some 36 units of
housing in the initial phase of
development.
Also much discussed. has
been redevelopment in the Ci-
ty's existing downtown com-
mercial area. While nothing
has happened to date by the
way of new buildings or con-
struction, the City has been
working with a local
downtown development cor-
poration to try to, generate
redevelopment in the
downtown area. Redevelop-'
ment and growth in the
downtown area is a high
priority of the Elk'River City
Council and if a project can
be developed which is finan-
cially feasible, .this project
will have all of the support
necessary from the City to
make it successful.

Guardian. Angels Auxiliary

The Guardian Angels Aux-
iliary is a volunteer organiza-
tion of the Elk River Nursing
Home. The - Auxiliary meets
quarterly. Each year the Aux-
iliary sponsors a Christmas
bazaar as wellas an ice cream
social. These events raise
money to go for special pro-

jects which are chosen by the
auxiliary. Different projects
funded by the Guardian
Angels over the years include
a portable popcorn popper,
player piano, an organ, clocks
and folding chairs for the
residents' rooms.
The annual Christmas

bazaar will be held Sunday,
Dec. 2 from 2-4 p.m. at the Elk
River Nursing Home. This
year a homemade rosemalled
trunk filled with crafts made
by the auxiliary will be raffled
off. Tickets are available at
the Elk River Nursing Home.
You need Onot be present to'
win.

NORTHLAND
.
