MIDDLE SCHOOL MILESTONES At Sandburg Middle School, like most schools, the weeks prior to Christmas are especially filled with numerous special events. The first of these events was a November vocal concert entitled, 'Music from the Movies'. The stars of the show were about 300 6th graders. They sang hit songs such as: 'The Entertainer', 'One Tin Sol- dier' and several other popular show tunes. Included in each number was some fonn of small group accom- paniment, which varied from soloists and instrumentals to dancing and gym- nastics. Shortly before Christmas three ad- ditional concerts were held at Sand- burg. The theme of the 7th grade choir concert was 'Christmas Around the World.' Numbers included Christ- mas songs which are popular in other nations. The group also did an en- core presentation later in the week at the Anoka Senior Citizen Highrise. The 6th and 7th grade orchestras (string instruments) entertained parents and friends with their win- ter concert also. Selections included 'Rocky Mountain SWitchback, "Match- maker' and a Christmas Medley. Finally, the 6th and 7th grade bands held their winter concert which included such popular tunes as 'Theme from Dallas', and a few Christmas tunes. Band is taught by Neil Clasen, orchestra by Margaret Ekstrum, and vocal music by Barb LeCuyer, Tom Fischer and Margaret Ekstrum. Every year at Christmas time stu- dents are busy in their classes ma- king special Christmas gifts. But there were none that meant as much as the ornaments which some of the children at Sandburg made for the sake of less fortunate youngsters. These child-made ornaments were given to the Sheraton Park place Hotel, which in turn donated a $5-$8 gift to needy children for every ornament they received. Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Hall, who organized the pro- ject at Sandburg, several less for- tunate children had a happy Christmas. --Glen Semanko -"- are very giving and caring mothers. They take their time to help another mom's child in a special one to one way. I'm not sure who feels better after one of these sessions, the child or the volunteer. There are others of us that work in the office. We do all sorts of things. Sometimes we cut little tiny pieces of paper, all different colors, all different sizes and sha- pes. After an hour and a half of this it begins to look very foolish. (we begin to question the teachers.) Then in a few days some of us have the pleasure of seeing our child bring home all those little pieces (this is what keeps us coming back) and mira- culously, with the guidance of a teacher, their little hands have transformed all those little pieces of colored paper into a snowman, a pilgrim or a wonderful, beautiful col- lage. This is just a small part of being a Volunteer at Ramsey SchooL.. the other part is scraping dried egg yolk from dishes at two in the afternoon!! I almost forgot, did you know that we have a nursery in our Volunteer program? We actually have Moms who volunteer to care for the kids of the Moms that work at Ramsey School... now that's a Volunteer worth her salt! For the next issue of the paper I would like to hear from volunteers. Maybe you have a funny story to tell or a rewarding experience to share. VOLUNTEERS When asked to write an article for the first issue of the Ramsey Resi- dent about the Volunteer Program at Ramsey School, I was excited at the chance to "toot our horn". We as a group have been working at this program for 4 years now and the system changes, grows and just plain gets better every year. The people who are a part of this Volunteer program are very special ladies. They leave dishes on the table, beds unmade and sometimes even worse than that!! We all feel we have a job to do that's import- ant. Some of us work with children, that's the M.A.R.S. program.
