SNOWSTORM DRILL After observing the EXCELLENT job the public Works Department did in cleaning up after Dec.'s storm, I was slightly upset by the complaints and snide remarks that filtered my way. To make sure this doesn't hap- pen the next time we have a record breaking storm, I propose that the following THOUGHT PROCESS be made mandatory for every resident in Ramsey. The situations will be cap- italized and the proper thought will follow. With sufficient prac- tice I'm confident we can all mas. ter it. THOUGHT PROCESS UPON RISING AND VIEWING THE BEAUTY CREATED BY 17 INCHES OF SNOW: "Oh, what a gorgeous day, I'm so lucky to be snug in my cozy home with my family!" WHAT TO DO: "Just think, a whole day to take life easy, why, we could play games in front of the fireplace.... or build a snowman. Maybe later I can even finish that book I started! But for now, I think I'll hop back in my nice warm bed for awhile." UPON RISING A SECOND TIME AND DIS- COVERING THERE'S NO MILK FOR CEREAL: "Oh my goodness, there's no milk! Now, I shouldn't panic, there's re- ally no need to call the police, they must be busy helping people who need them more than I. This is almost an adventure in pioneering...how ex- citing! We'll have eggs and toast in- stead. LATER IN THE DAY WHEN YOU FEEL THE URGE TO GO SOMEWHERE: "'!bey haven't plowed yet? oh dear. .what ARE they doing? Maybe they had a rough time getting to the shop...I never noticed whether any of them had wings. Last time Merle went in at lam. to res- cue the squad cars and keep them moving. Then he had to plow to Maple Grove for Daryl and Bethel for Mick.. then they had to dig out the part- time help. What long strenous hours those men have been working already! Why last time, Merle worked 22 hours straight! I don't know if I could do that...not when you have to contend with abandoned cars...the blinding glare of pure white snow and those drifts, in some parts they must be fiVe feet deep!! I can hardly imagine plowinq 262 lane miles of that!! I guess I'll just settle back and relax, after all... Mpls. and st. Paul won't be dug out for at least a week! WHEN THE URGE TO SHOVEL HITS: "Gee, it'd feel good to get out there and shovel that driveway clear. Let me think a moment...I haven't had much exercise lately, I wonder what my risk for a heart attack is...Maybe I should wait lll1til the road is plowed just in case I need Emergency help. AFTER THE PLOW HAS CLEARED ONE LANE: "Boy, is that ever smart! They're opening a path through the entire city instead of just plowing two lanes th- rough half, I'll just have to be care- ful if I venture out." AFTER THE PLOW HAS CLEARED TWO LANES: "Well, time to dig out the mailbox.. sure am glad I don't live in the city where they have to shovel the side- walks! " WHEN RAMSEY'S ALL CLEANED uP AND OTHER CITIES ARE STILL FLOUNDERING IN SNOW: "We've sure got a great crew out here, . I they worked really hard to clean up our City...and I bet they've gotten alot of complaints from unthinking residents. I should give them a call and let them know I think they did a fantastic job!" --Sue Vanwagner P.S. Would the people who objected to plows that throw snow into driveways please call with the make of the one that doesn't...we'd like to buy one. TAX NEWS Minnesota tax law changes that affect 1982's income tax, may cause a few taxpayers heart's to skip a beat. The 7% surtax that is tacked on(over and above the tax table amount) and the drastic change in the allowed medical deduction will cause some taxpayers to dip in their pockets for the first time this year. Every year I rework our tax return using this year's income and deduc- tions with last year's income tax laws. Last year we would have re- ceived a $2.00 reflll1d. This year we will have to pay in $181.00. Total net change is $183.00 more than last year's. On the front page of your Minn. Income Tax Forms and Instruction Booklet is printed that the surtax is temporazy I'm more inclined to believe that only the percentage is temporary and that t.lte surtax will stay with us for a few years --L.
