NEW CHAIRPERSON TO BE
NAMED TO DISTRICT 11
COMMUNITY EDUCA TION
ADVISORY COUNCIL

Mrs. Joan Thunell. 7231 . 152nd Lane N. W..
Ramsey will be the like/}. choice as the new
chairperson of the Dislfict 11 Community
Education Advisory Council in January. Mrs.
Thunell has served 0/1 the council for three
years and was elected vice chairperson in
t979.
In addition to her involvement with the

District wide council she has also been very
active as a local Advisory Council Member at
Ramsey School. She is very active in
Community Education teaching adult quilting
classes, attending workshops and conferences
and volunteering at school functions and
special events. The people of Ramsey can be
proud to have such an outstanding and
outspoken leader in their midst. The District 11
Advisory Council meets regularly on the fourth
Thursday of every month to provide input into
programs and services in community
education for District 11. The pUblic is invited
and encouraged to attend these meetings. For
more information call 755-8220, extension 243.

FAMILY FUN DAY
SET FOR FEBRUARY

This year's annula Family Fun Day
sponsored by the Ramsey School Advisory
Council will be held on Saturday, February
9th, 1980. The annual event will feature a
carnival atmosphere with games, prizes,
fun and refreshments. Anyone who is
interested in helping carnival booths and
other details should contact the
Community School Office at 427-9350,
between 1 and 5 p.m.

NEW SUMMER
PLA YGROUND
CONCEPT TO BE
IN/TIA TED

Beginning this summer at Ramsey
Community School a new concept in
summer playground programs will be given
a trial run.
The new concept invqlves a Roving
Playground idea in which arts and crafts
activities and supervised games will be
offered at various park locations in the
Ramsey area. It is a way of making the
program more accessible to the people.
In the past, the morning playground
program was held at the school. Many
residents have difficulty getting their
children to the school because of the
distance many homes are from the school.
The new concept will hopefully increase
participation by bringing the activities
closer to home. The idea was experimented
with in the City of Andover in 1979 and was
very well received.
Marc Hadley, Coordinator at Ramsey
Community School will be meeting with
City Park Board officials in January and
February, to discuss park locations and
program possibilities.
It is hoped that the Roving Playground
Concept will add new life to the Ramsey
Summer Playground Program.

PROJECT P.O.W.E.R.

Project P.O. W.E.R. is a federally funded
program that is aimed at providing adult
education, recreation and enrichment
programs for mentally handicapped adults
and hearing impaired adults in Anoka
County.
It was begun this past fall, and Is being
administered through the Community
Education Department of Anoka Hennepin
District No. 11. Under the direction of Jim
Stewart, Director of Community Education;
Project Coordinator, Mary Lou Gorski; has
been working, to identify adults within the
county who are mentally handicapped or
hearing impaired. Once people are located,
P.O.W.E.R. set out to determine the needs
and interests of those people and to
determine how the program can best meet
those needs.
Ms. Gorski and several outreach workers
have provided interpreters for Community
Education classes so that hearing impaired
adults may participate. They have also
increased awareness about the needs and
concerns of hearing impaired and mentally
handicapped adults through informative
sessions and by working with a special
advisory group.

INDOOR CONCERT PLANNED
FOR APRIL

The Ramsey School Advisory Council is planning an
indoor concert featuring Bob Kase and his Big Band
Sound. The concert date will be sometime in April.
Bob Kase is an extremely talented and popular
musician who will be bringing his exciting 17 piece
band in for an evening of musical entertainment. The
concert is made possible in part by a grant from the
Minneapolis Musician's Union and also from funds
raised by the Ramsey Advisory Council.
It is hoped that events such as this will help bring
the performing arts closer to home in Ramsey and
help promote family appreciation of music. The
concert will be free and open to the public and be held
in the gym at Ramsey school. Watch for flyers and
posters with more information about this event.

............~...........................~....,..........................................~.........~.........-.~~...........,..~.........~~................

RAMSEY
SPECIAL EVENTS

Two of the biggest highlights at Ramsey
Community School this Fall were the
Halloween Party on October 3h;t and the
annual Santa Brunch on December 8th.
Halloween night found morn than 500
mom's, dad's and kids raking part III the
festivities at school. which included a spook
house, put on by the Ramsey Lions and many

games and prizes arid a costume contest. It
was a good chance to escape the cold wet
weather and meet friends and neighbors at the
school.
The Santa Brunch was equally as popular
with over 500 people taking part. A visit with
Santa for the young ones and hot chocolate or
coffee and a roll for everyone were the orch:1 .jf
the day. The
organization will more commonly be known
as RY AA. The formation of RY AA will
provide for the organization of athletic
programs for the youth of Ramsey. The
programs will be the same as those
organized by Anoka Youth Athletic
Association.
Schedules and registrations will be
coordinated with those of AYAA, but it will
no longer be necessary. for the youth of
Ramsey to go into Anoka to register. This
will, now be done at Ramsey school. RY AA
will provide equipment to the Ramsey
participants in the programs and will be
responsible for providing coaches. Another
function of RY AA will be to assist the Park
and Recreation Commission of Ramsey in
planning and development of facilities for
the youth of Ramsey to pursue their athletic
interests. Until Ramsey has proper and
adequate facilities to play football, soccer,
softball, and baseball, the majority of their
games will need to be scheduled at Anoka
facilities.
On December 10 a meeting was held at
Ramsey school to elect officers for the first
year of operation. The officers elected are
as follows: President-AI Kempf, Vice
President-Bob Peterson, Secretary-Marlene
Looyan, Treasurer-Dave Locy, Athletic
Director-Jack Ippel, Staff Advisor-Bruce
Gregerson, Equipment Director-Don Lokker,
and Publicity Director-Sharon Menge. This
Board of Directors will meet on a monthly
basis and these meetings are not yet
established, but anyone interested may
contact any of the officers to get put on the
calling list.
Bob Peterson who is chairman of the By-
laws Committee discussed the proposed
By-Laws prior to the election. Jack Ippel,
Chairman of the Finance Committee, then
discussed the ideas his committee had for
raising the funds. The Ramsey Lions Club
president, Jack Kirchner, was at the
meeting to present a check for $1000 to get
RY AA off the ground. Also present was lyle
Heger representing Mate Punch and Die
Company. He presented a check for $200.
This is the type of support needed to get a ,
program such as RYAA going and it is
appreciated by the people of Ramsey.
It is planned to have RY AA ready to
handle the baseball and softball programs
this comming summer followed by football
and soccer in the fall and basketball and
volleyball in the winter months. Donations
of any type are being accepted at this time.

MINNESOTA LITERACY
CENTER OPENS

fhis past fall the Minnesota Literacy
Council, Inc. and Anoka-Hennepin School
District 11 Community Education co-
sponsored a new Adult Literacy Center at
Goon Rapids Junior High Communitv
~;ChO(il.
