KNOW YOUR SEPTIC TANK?

By Clayton Berg, Building Official

I'm sure your first impression reading this letter is probably:
"What a strange question!" ~owever, it may not seem as strange
ifyol.lr on-site septic system fails. . . .
There are a-number of things that should not be done If you
expect your system to continue functioning properly. Although
not all inclusive, some of these items are:
1. Don't deposit coffee grounds, cooking fats, cigarette ~tts
disposable diapers or any other nondecomposable materials
into the septic tank. These items buildup in the tank and can
plug either the inlet or the outlet. . .
Be conservative with your use of water. Each gallon of water
plaCed in :the. system must be treated and disposed. Leaky
fixtures do contribute considerably to the water usage and
could overload a system that would function properly if it
were repaired,' ... '. . , ,', .
Spread washing of, clothes' out during the, week to avoid
"overloading the sewage system in any, one day.
'Although water ,softener discharger will not harm a septic
sYstem, it may be advisable to separate this from the system c
. 'and. dispose of . it on the ground surface if your systems
capacity is marginal. This waste water can be disposed of in
this manner as it contains no pathogens. .
Don't use additives in your system that profess to clean your
system. The best results you could have would be no results
at all. Additives break up solids that would normally settle in
the bottom of the tank and floats them to the surface.
Eventually they find: their Wlf( into the drainfield resulting in
a plugged drainfield;. ...../ .....
. Check your tank for build-up of sludge or scum. Normal use
of a system will require pumping of a system at
approxi mately two year intervals. If a garbage disposal unit is
in use, pumping may be required more frequently because of
amore rapid build up of solids.
" As septic systems do not need the introduction of bacteria for
start up, this closing note is for the lady of the house. It has been
determined that the best use of yeast is for baking bread and not
placing in the septic system. This use receives more appreciation
by farH . . .
. Disposing of wastes is a costly activity. The cooperation of all
Ramsey residents in proper use and maintenance of their septic
systems can prevent poll ution. Without this cooperation the very
costly installation of sewer lines for wastewater collection will
affect us all.

DOG CLINIC
The City of Ramsey will hold a dog clinic on Saturday, April
1, 1978, at Ramsey City Municipal Building, 15153 Nowthen
Boulevard N. "'.;;;:}1~F'>

PLEASE DO NOT LET
YOUR DOG RUN LOOSE!
Again, we are asking that all residents who own dogs, please
do not let them run loose. There is a leash law in the City which
prohibits this. Impoundment of your dog by the dog catcher will
now cost you what it costs the City for capture of the animal
plust $5.00 which in most cases will cost between $17.50 and
$23.75. This seems to be a year round problem. not only in this
City but in all Cities: With our ever increasing population the
problem is becoming more noticible and complain1S are being
received more frequently. Your cooperation is most desperately
needed and very much appreciated not only by us at City Hall,
but your neig, bars. The City dog ordinance also requires dogs six
months or older to be licensed. If you cannot get to the City Hall
during office hours-try to go to the 4/1/78 Saturday dog clinic
for your license. The dog has to have a rabies vaccinati on in order
to obtain a license. The dog clinic may be a good opportunity to
get both things taken care of at the same time.
