- 4 - We will issue a basic uniform to those who qualify and they will be given a standard first aid course, receive training in the handling of ~ police shotgun, with special emphasis on "When to" and will be made fam~..i.iar with the squad unit and its equipment. As finances permit, we will con- duct further training in traffic control, accident scene control and in- vestigation, crowd control, advanced first-aid and additional firearm training. At this time reserve officers will not carry firearms. With a complement of 12 persons, duty hours will generally consist of four to eight hours on Friday and Saturday nights. This means about g hours a month per person to put in on a volunteer basis. If you are interested in being a part of this community effort, please stop in at the City Hall and pick up an application form. We hope to have the unit "on the street" by July 1, 1975. Thank you, Mike Auspos, Ramsey Police. ************ NEIGHBORHOOD COORDINATORS NEEDED The Ramsey Police Department is looking for persons to serve as neighbor- hood coordinators. So as not to keep you in suspense, I will define thb term. Really, it is a fancy title that takes up the space of 24 letters and it means "helper" (six letters). But it does sound impressive: Ser- iously though, it is an impressive position when viewed as a service to one's community. Here's why: The City of Ramsey is participating in Op- eration Identification and Minnesota Crimewatch programs, both of which are proving to be of value as deterrents to criminal activity in Minne- sota. To really make these programs effective in a community, we, the police, must "spread the good word" to as many citizens as possible; the entire communi ty ideally. Now, in urban areas or in relatively high den- sity suburbs this task is simplified by working with and through the many agencies and organizations in those areas; schools (PTA), churches, civic organizations (Lions, Optimists, Elks, Jaycees, CC's and businessperson groups) . Ramsey, however, as a relative infan-t, is a little short of these sort of groups insofar as scope of membership is concerned. Therefore, we are going to try a different approach, one that involves the aforementioned groups but also expands into the neighborhoods. We are looking for home- owners to act as a liason, or go-between, for the police and citizens. These persons would canvass their respective neighborhoods to determine interest in participation, not only in Operation Identification and Minne- sota Crimewatch, but also in local efforts involving first-aid training gun, snowmobile and bike safety programs, drug talks, disaster aid and nearly anything else that could be of benefit to the community. LOT OF TIME? No, we are not asking for much in the way of time or physical involvement. We have and will have all the information about these programs, printed in pamphlet or hand-out form. We have slides for Minnesota Crimewatch and have ready access to other slides and films covering a variety of subjects. We have already started a first aid training program and have instructors and texts. Meeting places and speakers are no problem either. What we need is people. Groups of people from our multi-nucleus neighborhood ar- rangemen~. What a Neighborhood Coordinator would so is simply get around a little in his or her neighborhood and let people know what is available to them and how they can not only help themselves but also help us, the police, help them.
