RAMSEY TREE FACTS

RAMSEY SENIOR NEWS

The following is a comparison of the tree population
of Ramsey in 1979 and 1992. These are representative
approximations gathered from City studies performed by
Richard A. Dahlman, consultant forester, in 1979, and by
Kunde Co., Inc., forestry consultants, in 1992. The
second study included the understory or smaller trees,
hence a larger count per species. Ramsey is 18,500 acres
in size and is forested with 18 to 21 counted species of
native trees.
The most significant finding is that the 1992 study
points to a 8% decline in total forest area. Another
concern is the increasing prevalence of Box elders. These
trees are rapidly establishing in the voids left by dying
Oaks and Elms, reducing natural regeneration. The latter
study was funded in part by a grant from the Department
of Natural Resources.

1979 1222
Total Forested Cover 34% 26.%.
Oaks 40% 51%
Boxelder 13% 22%
Trembling Aspen 28%
Dead Oaks 5% 6%

Other species included in the study are: Green Ash,
Paper Birch, Basswood, Red Maple, Hackberry, Big
Tooth Poplar, Black Cherry, Red Pine, Catalpa, White
pine, Scotch Pine, Northern Red Cedar (Juniper), and
White Spruce. Other native deciduous species noted
were not significant in number: Silver Maple,
Black Locust, Cottonwood, Siberian Elm, Tamarack,
Ironwood, Black Willow, Black Walnut, Butternut, and
Hawthorn.
A gorgeous spring like day greeted us for our March potluck lunch and
meeting. Betty Vielguth shared her and her husband's experiences in Iran from
several years ago. She showed slides and brought artifacts from there. It was very
interesting.
Our club was asked to handle the food concession at the Ramsey
Environmental Expo and Tree Sale on April 30th. We voted to do so. At the April
meeting, a sign-up sheet will be passed for those who want to help either by
donating or selling baked goods.
At the April meeting we will view a video, "The Hitch". This is about a trip
taken across the country from the Atlantic to the Pacific by a team of six Belgian
horses pulling a wagon. They make stops here and there and we will see how this
"old fashioned" mode of transportation works. This video is recommended by
one of our group who says it is very interesting.
Do plan to join us. We meet the first Wednesday of each month at noon for
a pot luck meal, followed by a brief business meeting and then a program. See
you then.
