Any fuel that bums can produce carbon
monoxide including gasoline, kerosene, wood, natural
gas, propane, and fuel oil. To prevent carbon monoxide
poisoning, all furnaces, wall heaters, space heaters, and
wood burning stoves must be vented in an approved
manner. If working on an automobile indoors, windows
and doors should be left open to allow for proper
ventilation.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may be:

A feeling of dizziness, severe headache, and a
sudden feeling of tiredness.
Nausea and weakness to the point of not caring what
happens; may experience difficulty walking.
The victim may become unconscious and show
signs of respiratory distress.

Treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning:

*

*

*

* Get the victim away from the source of the
poisoning.
* Call 911.
* Be prepared to administer CPR if necessary.

Carbon monoxide detectors are available to help
detect the deadly gas. The detectors can be purchased at
most hardware stores and home stores. Placement of the
detector is important; follow the manufacturers
recommended placement The Consumer Products Safety
Commission (CPSC) recommends the use of "at least one
carbon monoxide detector per household, located
outside the sleeping area."

What should you do if your detector sounds an alarm and you have not
pressed the test button:

* At any point if you are unsure what to do, call 911.
* Remain calm, unless you feel sick it is not an emergency. The alarm is an
early warning signal to have your appliances checked out
* Do a head count of all residents to make sure none are experiencing the
symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. If anyone is, call 911.
* Open windows to ventilate the residence.
* Continue to monitor the occupants to mate sure none are experiencing
symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
* Contact the local gas company or appliance repair company to check all
appliances.
* If unable to control the carbon monoxide level, call 911 and have the Fire
Department dispatched. The Ramsey Fire Department has recently
purchased a carbon monoxide detection unit to determine the level of carbon
monoxide and help identify the source.

This information has been provided as a public service from your
friends and neighbors, the members of the Ramsey Fire Department.

WATERMAINFLUSHING
October 2, 1995 through October 13, 1995

Our Public Works Department will be flushing watermains and hydrants
from Monday, October 2,1995, through Friday, October 13, 1995.
