While doing these things, there are wise ways to ensure
that everyone is safe and sound throughout the merriment.
If carving pumpkins is a main Halloween activity in your
home and young children want to participate, have them draw faces
on the pumpkins for adults to carve. Candles are not the safest way
to illuminate ajack 0' lantern, but if you us them be certain to use
votive candles. Candle lit pumpkins should always be placed on a
sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, as
well as out of children's reach, and should never be left unattended.

While trick-or-treating, children should:
. Walk on sidewalks, cross streets only at comers and never
between parked cars, and remove masks before crossing the
street.
. Carry a flashlight.
. Be accompanied by an adult.
. Stop only at well-lit houses or apartments and never enter the
homes of strangers.
. Bring candy home to be inspected before consuming it.
Parents should:
. Look at candy, check the wrapping carefully and toss out
anything that looks suspect.
Costumes should:
. Have retro-reflective tape, fabric or decorative patches attached
to them.
. Be made of flame-retardant materials.
. Not interfere with movement and not include high-heeled shoes
or dangling parts that someone could trip over.
. Include face paint instead of masks, if possible. Masks can
obstruct vision and/or restrict breathing.
. Have accessories made of cardboard and other soft and flexible
materials.

Motorists should:
. Slow down and drive carefully.
. Watch for children walking in the street or on medians and
curbs.
Residents should:
. Make sure yards are clear of things such as ladders, hoses,
dog leashes and flower pots that can trip visitors.
Sweep wet leaves away from sidewalks and stoops.
Have a well-lighted hl)me, both inside and out.
Place something other than candles injack 0' lanterns that will
be outside your home so that flames don't spread to costumes
or anything else visitors may have.
Consider healthy-food alternatives (prepackaged, of course)
to candy, such as low-fat crackers with cheese or peanut butter
filling, single-serve boxes of cereal, fruit rolls or mini boxes of
raisins. Many trick-or-treaters also appreciate non-food treats,
including pencils, stickers and erasers.

HEALTHY START OFFERS:
"Everything You Wanted to Ask Your
Pediatrician But Were Afraid to Ask"

A free informational session to parents will answer
questions regarding the following types of issues: Sleep Routines,
Developmental Concerns, Behavioral Issues, Infant Feeding, Sibling
Relations and Biting.
