CODE OF ETHICS FOR METROPOLITAN COUNCIL MEMBERS <br />WHEREAS, public confidence in the integrity of governmental officials is an essential <br />ingredient for effective government; and <br />WHEREAS, the citizens of the metropolitan area are entitled to expect that the Metropolitan <br />Council members will adhere to the highest ethical standards; and <br />WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council believes that these ethical standards should be made <br />known to all citizens of the metropolitan area. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL HAS DETERMINED THAT: <br />1. A Council member in the course of or in relation to his or her official duties should not, <br />directly or indirectly, receive or agree to receive any payment of expense, compensation, <br />gift, reward, gratuity, favor, service or promise of future employment or other future <br />benefit from any source other than the Council for any activity related to the duties of a <br />Council member with the exception of: <br />(a) gifts of nominal value; <br />(b) plaques or similar mementos recognizing individual service; <br />(c) honoraria and expenses for papers, talks, demonstrations or appearances made by <br />Council members for which they are not compensated or reimbursed by the <br />Council; or <br />(d) reimbursement of expenses for travel or meals, not to exceed actual expenses <br />incurred, which are not reimbursed by the Council. <br />2. A Council member should not use confidential information to further the member's <br />private interests and should not accept employment or involvement in a business or <br />activity that would require the member to disclose or use such confidential information. <br />3. A Council member should not apply for employment at the Metropolitan Council for at <br />least one year from the last date of service as a Council member. <br />4. A Council member should not use or allow the use of the Council's leased premises, <br />equipment or supplies, including postage, for the member's private interests or for any <br />other use not directly related to the member's duties and responsibilities. <br />
