CASE # I

CONSIDER TRAFFIC CONTROL CHANGES ON
ALPINE DRIVE AT CSAH 83 AND CSAH 56
By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer

,
Background:

Attached are figures illustrating the suggested signage.changes to the intersections ofthe Alpine
Drive/tSAR 83 and Alpine DrivelCSAH 56 recommended by Anoka Highway Department. The
primary changes associated with this newtraffic control plan for these two intersections include
the following:

(a) Placing a double set of STOP signs on the City street approaches; with a standard 36 inch
sign on the left side and an oversized 48 inch sign on the right; and including Cross Traffic Does
Not Stop tags beneath th~ STOP signs.

(b) Installing a double set .of symbol style STOP AHEAD signs on both sides of the City street
approaches. In the case of eastbound Alpine boulevard approaching Ramsey Boulevard this will
be a replacement of a word style STOP AHEAD sign. These STOP AHEAD signs will be
placed at the approach distances recommended in the Uniform Manual on Traffic Control
Devices in Minnesota.

Anoka County indicated that the changes described in (a) above were to be made by the County
Highway Department during the week of November 7, 2006. The changes recommended in
portion (b) above would be the responsibility of the City.

Recommendation:

Staff is recommending that the City proceed with the installation of the recommended signage
changes to the intersections. of Alpine Boulevard and CSAH 83 and. Alpine Boulevard and
CSAH 56 at an estimated cost of $1200.

Action:

Motion to recommend to City Council that staffbe directed to proceed with the installation of the
recommended signage changes to the intersections of Alpine Boulevard and CSAR 83 and
Alpine Boulevard and CSAH 56 at an estimated cost of$1200 with the cost of the signage to be
from the Public Works sign account.

Reviewed by:
Public Works Director/Principal Engineer
Fire Chief
Police Chief
Finance Officer
Street Supervisor

PW: 11/21/06
