See sections 1106 and 1108 of the Plumbing code for design requirements. <br /> <br /> <br />AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEMS: <br />If openings are not provided in each 50 feet on at least one exterior wall or there is floor area <br />more than 75 feet from an exterior opening, an automatic sprinkler system is required. Openings <br />shall have a minimum dimension of 30 inches. There must be at least 20 sq. ft. of opening in <br />every 50 lineal feet of wall or fraction thereof. The height of the bottom of the opening shall not <br />exceed 44 inches measured from the floor. (903.2.11.1) <br /> <br />An automatic sprinkler system is required where a fire area containing Group S-1 exceeds <br />12,000 square feet (903.2.9 #1, #1) or the combined fire area on all floors exceeds 24,000 square <br />feet. (903.2.9 #1, #3) <br />Note: The size of the fire area may be reduced using fire barriers. See section 707.3.10 for <br />requirements. <br />The fire-resistive rating for the fire barrier assembly is 3 hours. (Table 707.3.10) <br />An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided when the area exceeds 2,500 square feet and is <br />used for the storage of upholstered furniture or mattresses. (903.2.9 #5) <br />Note: The size of the fire area may be reduced using fire barriers. (Table 707.3.10) <br /> <br />[F] 903.2.10 Group S-2 enclosed parking garages. <br />An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided throughout buildings classified as enclosed <br />parking garages in accordance with Section 406.6 where either of the following conditions <br />exists: <br />1. 1.Where the fire area of the enclosed parking garage exceeds 12,000 square feet (1115 <br />m2). <br />2. 2.Where the enclosed parking garage is located beneath other groups. <br />Exception: Enclosed parking garages located beneath Group R-3 occupancies. <br /> <br />[F] 903.2.10.1 Commercial parking garages. <br />An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided throughout buildings used for storage of <br />commercial motor vehicles where the fire area exceeds 5,000 square feet (464 m2). <br /> <br />Note Limitations <br /> <br />903.2.9.3 Group S-1 upholstered furniture and <br />mattresses. <br />An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided throughout a Group S-1 fire area used <br />for the storage of upholstered furniture or mattresses that exceeds 2,500 square feet <br />(232 m2). <br />Exception: Self-service storage facilities (mini-storage) no greater than one story above <br />grade plane where all storage spaces can be accessed directly from the exterior.
