10
RAMSEY LIONS
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
BILL WEISS
October activity for our club consisted of
selling food and beverages at the Ramsey Happy
Days. There was a good turnout and everybody
enjoyed the entertainment, especially the Classics
Band.
The club swore in two new members in the
month of November. We also donated $500 to a
Ramsey family with some mounting medical bills. We
donated clothes and a gift certificate to another needy
Ramsey family.
We delivered 36 food baskets before
Thanksgiving and another 36 food baskets before
Christmas. These were given to needy Ramsey
families. On December 14th, we provided a bus for
Ramsey seniors and toured the local light displays.
The first Lions Club was founded in Chicago
around 1917 by a salesman named Melvin Jones. Jones
saw more promise in joining local goodwill clubs
together than in each of them working on their own.
His idea caught on so fast that the Lions founded their
International initiative the same year. There are now
over 44,700 Lions Clubs worldwide.
In honor of Melvin Homes, a prestigious award
is given in his name to a member or members who
exemplify what Jones used as a motto: "You can't
get very far until you start doing something for
somebody else." Our club is proud to announce that
three members were given the Melvin Jones award
for their service to the club and community over the
years. The recipients are Lion Frank Frederick, Lion
Tom Kujawa and Lion Julie Sharp.
Congratulations to all three of these members
for their well - deserved recognition. Anyone interested
in getting involved with our club is invited to our
meetings, which are held the first and third Wednesdays
at 7:30 p.m. at the Super Bowl. Everyone is welcome!
COMMUNITY
ACTIVITY SIGN
If you are interested in renting space on the
Community Activities sign at the Ramsey Municipal
Center, please call Kathy Schmitz at 427 -1410.
PUBLIC SAFETY AIDES SERVE RAMSEY IN
A VARIETY OF WAYS
It was two years ago, in September 1998, that a group of
eleven Ramsey residents formed the Public Safety Aide Unit under
the guidance of Sergeant Tim Dwyer of the Ramsey Police
Department. After attending Anoka County Police Reserve
Academy, the PSA's have gone on to assist at community events,
perform patrol throughout the city, help with National Night Out
events, and aid other departments such as with the recent Linwood
Fire. PSA's are frequent chaperones at the Teen Nights at Ramsey
Elementary School.
To take advantage of PSA's varied skills and interests, the
Public Safety Aide Unit developed two divisions: the Police
Reserve Division and the Community Outreach Team. The
Police Reserves are uniformed volunteers whose main duties
include serving the community through patrolling, providing traffic
assistance at events, and responding to call -outs when needed.
This division currently has thirteen volunteers, both men and women,
and is seeking applicants to join the current members. Police
reserves generally attend one training meeting per month, patrol
eight times per year, and volunteer for events as needed. Officer
Nick Stolp now serves as the Police Liaison to the group.
The Community Outreach Team, headed by Chandra
Kreyer, Ramsey Crime Prevention Specialist, is comprised of
volunteers who are interested in strengthening the community of
Ramsey. The team has worked on youth projects in the city and is
looking forward to starting work with seniors in the coming year.
If you are interested in being a part of the Public Safety
Aide Unit, stop by the Ramsey Police Department for an
application. Because the Police Reserve Division requires
attendance at a scheduled academy, applications are only open for
designated times. Applications for the Police Reserve
Division will be accepted through February 16' at 5:00 p.m.
You must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Minnesota
Driver's License to apply. Volunteers for the Community Outreach
Team may contact Chandra Kreyer at the Police Department (427-
6812) for further information.
If you can actually count your money, then you are not a rich man. — J.
