8
Leaflets of Three Continued From
Page 7

Symptoms of Allergic Reactions to Plants -
The allergic rash can affect any part of the body and
once the oil comes into contact with sian, the oil can
cause the development of a rash within minutes.
Redness and swelling occur within 12 - 48 hours
after exposure and is followed by blisters and severe
itching. Within a few days, the blisters become
crusted and scaly. In most cases, the rash lasts about
10 days.

Treatment of Exposure - If possible, wash
all exposed areas with cold running water as soon
as you can with a garden hose, stream, lal<e, etc. If
this can be done within 5 minutes, the water may
l<eep the Urushiol from penetrating to deeply into
the sl<in or spreading to other areas. Also, as soon
as you can, scrub under your fingernails with a brush
to prevent the spreading of the oil through scratching.

Rinse your clothing with a garden hose
outside before touching any areas that may have
Urushiol on them. If you need to bring your clothes
into the house, be careful not to touch any furniture,
walls, or rugs. They can be washed in a washer
with warm water and detergent. Also wash off any
gardening tools or sports equipment as well as
Urushiol remains active for months after contact.

Relieve the itching of mild rashes by talang
cool showers and applying calamine lotion. It is
important to l<eep cool as body heat and sweating
aggravates the itching.

In severe cases, you may need to see a
physician. They will be able to prescribe medicated
ointments or oral steriods to counteract the effects
of Urushiol.

Prevention is the Best Cure - Learn the
shape and colors of the leaves, fruits and shapes of
these poisonous plants. Keep your pets leashed
and wear long sleeves and long pants, socl<s and
shoes when wallang in areas where these plants may
be growing.

Information contained in this article were
found in the following web sites:
www.healthcentral.com
www.aad.org/pamphlets/poisonivy.html

A HUGE SUCCESS

Ramsey Elementary and Ramsey City worl<ed together and
made this years Environmental Expo the largest ever.
