We
will have rides, food and entertainment going all day and most of it is
free. This is our way of giving back to the Ramsey residents. Mark
your calendars and bring the family for a fun- filled afternoon.
One of the questions that gets asked about the Lions Club
is, besides putting on events like the Ramsey Picnic, what exactly
are the Lions about? We donate a lot back to our communities, not
only financially but to be more specific, social services. There is no
Lions Club without social services, and not only sight related, but
also for the ill, elderly, children in need, the disabled and the lonely.
This list is really endless. Although our involvement is broad - based,
we still adhere to the challenge Helen Keller offered three - quarters
of a century ago. During the last decade, we inaugurated a giant
component of this mission: SIGHTFIRST. Lions worldwide have
since initiated more than 500 projects, including the construction of
clinics, equipment for hospitals, organizing training centers and
conducting surgical and medical camps. Lions can be proud that
thus far SIGHTFIRST has made possible in excess of four million
sight- restoring cataract surgeries. Our club just his fall donated
$6,000 to the Wellness van for a new field eye tester. So this year at
the Ramsey Picnic, not only will Ramsey residents be able to be
tested for diabetes and heart disease, they will also be able to have
their eyes tested free of charge. Last January we also purchased a
second "Jaws for Lift" tool that will be used at the newest Fire Station
in Ramsey. The cost for just one of these was close to $14,000.
We also purchased $2,800 of new communications radios for the
Fire Department. We have also donated close to $12,000 for the
training and teaching of the Lions Quest program, which is being
taught not only in Ramsey Elementary, but also in most of the Anoka
public and private grade schools.
Our club has put a lot back into the community and is proud
of it. We are always looking for new members to help continue
giving. Please feel free to stop in on the first and third Wednesday of
each month. Meetings are held at the Super Bowl in Ramsey at
7:30 p.m. Give some thought to joining and getting involved in your
community.
Bill Weiss
President
Ramsey Lions Club
We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. — Anonymous
