14
A HOLIDAY SHOPPING I ~ I
~ TIPS TO HELP Jlt l1
PROTECT THE EARTH!

The holiday season is upon us again! Here
are some simple tips to l(eep in mind that will help save
natural resources and protect the earth for future
generations:
Lool( for gifts that come without or with
minimal packaging.
Avoid single-use decorations like stickers,
spray snow and tinsel. Instead, use garlands
and reusable decorations.
Consider purchasing an artificial tree to reuse
each year.
Give gift certificates, tickets to the theater,
dinner concert or sporting event.
Reuse wrapping paper, boxes, and ribbons
from previous holidays.
Lool( for wrapping paper that is made out of
recycled paper.
Lool( for stationery, note cards, and holiday
cards made from recycled paper.
Lool( for gifts that are durable and have long-
term warranties.
Use air-popped popcorn instead ofpackaging
peanuts (include a note that says the popcorn
can be fed to birds).
Use washable/reusable utensils, plates, cloth
napkins and tablecloths instead of paper/
plastic products for holiday parties.

These are just a few things that we can all do
in an effort to help protect the earth. Stories of people and events are
history in its most basic form. Come to the Anoka County History
Center on November 24th from noon until 1 :00 p.m. to explore the
HiSTORY ofpie! The round table discussion is open to everyone
and is free. The History Center is located at 2135 Third Avenue
North in Anoka.
Yes, November's topic is PIE!! The history of pies and
the assocations we have with them to the holidays will be explored
before the discussion is opened up for everyone to share their
stories of favorite pies. Bring your best pie recipe or pie baking
secret, maybe even a sample along with your lunch to the History
Center on November 24th. Beverages will be provided.
These HiSTORY round tables alternate between lunch and
breal(fast, so if you don't lil(e to get up or you go to worl( early,
mark your calendar for the lunchtime event. Each round table
begins with a short tall( on the monthly topic. Following the
presentation, everyone is encouraged to share their stories, ask
questions and enjoy informal discussions from all participants.
The next HiSTORYlunch will be on December 15,7:30 a.m. in the
Anoka County History Center meeting room and the topic is
Christmas-Past and Present.
The HiSTORY programs have proven to be a lot of fun
while sharing history. It's a great excuse to grab that super-size at
the drive through and tell the boss you will be back from lunch a
few minutes late on the 24th.
For more information, please call the Anol(a County
Historical Society at 763-421-0600.

Snowplowing FAQ Continued From Page 10
Q. Why won't the city repair my sprinkler system or other
improvements I've made in the ROW when they damage it
plowing?
A. The City retains ownership of the right-of-way (ROW), which
in most cases is 12-15 feet from the edge of the road. This
ROW is reserved for utilities and their equipment, snow storage,
sidewalks, etc. Any improvements made to the ROW by the
homeowner are done so at their risl(.

Q. Who do I call if I have a complaint or comment about
snowplowing
A. Call the City of Ramsey's snow plow information hotline at
763-433-9852, and leave a message containing your name,
address, phone number and a brief description of your problem
or concern.. The policy of the Public Works department is to
return all phone calls, or meet with residents if they so request.

One measure of leadership is the caliber of people who choose to fol!ow. - Dennis A.
