The primary changes associated with this new
traffic control plan for these two intersections include the following:
(a) Placing a double set of STOP signs on the City street approaches; with a standard 36
inch sign on the left side and an oversized 48 inch sign on the right; and including Cross
Traffic Does Not Stop tags beneath the STOP signs.
(b) Installing a double set of symbol style STOP AHEAD signs on both sides of the City
street approaches. In the case of eastbound Alpine boulevard approaching Ramsey
Boulevard this will be a replacement of a word style STOP AHEAD sign. These STOP
AHEAD signs will be placed at the approach distances recommended in the Uniform
Manual on Traffic Control Devices in Minnesota.
City Engineer Jankowski advised Anoka County indicated that the changes described in (a)
above were to be made by the County Highway Department during the week of November 7,
2006. The changes recommended in portion (b) above would be the responsibility of the City.
Mr. Jankowski advised staff is recommending that the City proceed with the installation of the
recommended signage changes to the intersections of Alpine Boulevard and CSAH 83 and
Alpine Boulevard and CSAH 56 at an estimated cost of $1200.
Public Works Director Olson noted the signs are being made by staff. He explained the STOP
AHEAD signs located on Alpine Drive and CR 5 were changed at the request of the County to
ensure that it was done quickly. The County wanted to shore up the look and feel all the way
down Alpine Drive to keep a handle on the accidents. Mr. Olson advised it is crucial to move
forward with this as quickly as possible.
Chairperson Elvig inquired about the possibility of installing lighting such as flashers.
Public Works Supervisor Reimer explained the stop signs were enlarged and are already in place.
Motion by Councilmember Olson, seconded by Councilmember Jeffrey, to recommend to City
Council that staff be directed to proceed with the installation of the recommended signage
changes to the intersections of Alpine Boulevard and CSAH 83 and Alpine Boulevard and
CSAH 56 at an estimated cost of $1200 with the cost of the signage to be from the Public Works
sign account.
Public Works Committee /November 21, 2006
Page 3 of 8
