Motion carried. Voting Yes: Chairperson Elvig, Councilmembers Jeffrey and Olson. Voting
No: None. Absent: Councilmember Cook.
COMMITTEE INPUT
Receive Petition from Neighborhood Children at 158t" Street and Osmium Street
Public Works Director Olson reported the City received a letter from a number of children
residing north of 158th and Osmium Street regarding the recent sealcoating. Mr. Olson explained
the sealcoating does not have the black sheen it previously had, and the residents have expressed
concern that the road is more difficult to use for things such as writing with chalk and
rollerblading. Staff will respond to the residents with a letter indicating that the City appreciates
their input, but sealcoating is necessary maintenance for the roadway system. He requested input
from the Committee regarding the response letter.
The following suggestions were made for incorporation into the response letter:
^ Encouragement of the children following the proper procedure
^ Stress that the City is appreciative of the children coming forward, but caution that it is
dangerous to play in the streets
^ Encourage the children to get involved in the City's trail system / include a copy of the
City's trail map
Consensus of the Committee was to direct staff to draft a response letter to the children
incorporating the above suggestions and to present it to the Council to sign.
Update -Priority Streetlight Placement on Trails and Crosswalks on County Roadways
.Civil Engineer II Linton reported the Park and Recreation Commission agreed with the direction
the Council is taking in relation to the priority streetlight placement on trails and in relation to
crosswalks on county roadways.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion by Councilmember Jeffrey, seconded by Councilmember Olson, to close the regular
meeting of the Public Works Committee.
Motion carried.
The regular meeting of the Public Works Committee adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Brian Olson, Public Works Director
Drafted by Carol Hamer
Timesaver Off Site Secretarial, Inc.
Public Works Committee /November 21, 2006
Page 8 of 8
