Case #~
SKATE PARK PLANNING -EVALUATE ALPINE PARK
By: Mark Riverblood, Park's Supervisor
Background:
At the Commission's February meeting, the planning process for the Skate Park proposed for
2008 within the Parks Capital Improvement Program continued. Below are the planning tasks in
italics that have occurred - (with March's activity `pushed-out' to April for scheduling reasons).
o January '07: Planning begins; review skate parks in general, identify general considerations and
timeline for planning process. Become familiar with Roller Device Ordinance (prohibiting
skateboarding etc. in certain areas of Town Center). (Completed)
o February: Review pros and cons of park locations for the interim location; identify scope of
project (E.g. Tier 1 or Tier 2, BMX uses etc.). Discuss user demographics. (Completed)
o March: Review the undeveloped west side of Alpine as an interim skate park site -and
discuss sight-line and access issues on Alpine Drive.
o April: Receive presentation by local vendor/designer(s); prepare draft list of amenities
and factors crucial to success of project (E.g. proximity of restrooms, litter maintenance
concerns, minimum separation from residential units and other site considerations).
Observations:
At February's meeting, the Commission reviewed the various choices for an interim location for
the skate park; and determined that this examination should generally focus on Alpine Park at
this time. It was also discussed, that serious consideration should be given to the possibility that
there maybe momentum for the interim location for the skate park - to remain as a `permanent',
especially given the youth demographics in the area. This likelihood makes the `interim' location
a somewhat larger planning endeavor. This will be discussed, as well as other matters
concerning Alpine Park at the March meeting. What was previously identified for March activity
can be expected to occur in April.
Commission Action:
Based upon discussion
Reviewed by:
Director of Public Works/Principal Engineer
Civil Engineer II
P&R: 03/08/07
