Mr. Basich reviewed other <br />uses of wood in our lives today and estimated that anything will be obsolete in ten to twelve years <br />due to it becoming out of compliance, which will be long before this type of structure will deteriorate. <br /> <br />Mr. Basich displayed a picture ofa l~_mneapolis Park which was recently renovated and reviewed play <br />events which it contains. He advised they have a 12-year guarantee warranty. Mr. Basich displayed <br />a piece of metal fastener and explained how they are utilized to connect the playground components. <br />He stated this is very easily installed and is vandal resistant. Mr. Basich offered to answer questions. <br /> <br />Mr. Boos raised the issue of play value and stated he believes more will be pleased with the look of <br />wood but inquired regarding the dollar for dollar value. Mr. Basich stated he believes they are "right <br />in there" with other suppliers and their events are similar. <br /> <br />Mr. Basich presented a picture of a play event that can safely accommodate 12 children at one time <br />which is more than other play events on the market today. He stated another event for handicapped <br />users is a mm across which is a suspended trolley which can be turned, has completely enclosed self- <br />driving wheels, and a platform which can accommodate a handicapped or developmentally disabled <br />child who is able to get out ora chair. He stated this is a different type of play event than is normally <br />available. He commented on the cost of these types of unique play events. <br /> <br />Commissioner Johns inquired regarding the cost difference of metal versus wood. Mr. Basich stated <br />it is pretty much "apples to apples" and explained that when he is selling a metal structure he is <br />competing with others that provide the exact same type of structure and components so it is much <br />more price competitive. However, wood sometimes looses out in that type of situation. <br /> <br />Commissioner Droegemueller inquired regarding ease of installation. Mr. Basich stated he used to <br />be involved with installation and would rather install a wood structure since it is all standard machine <br />bolts and can even be erected by volunteers. Commissioner Droegemueller inquired regarding the <br />ease of expanding the structure. Mr. Basich stated it is completely modular without triangular decks <br />so it can easily be added onto. Commissioner Droegemueller asked if replacement parts are readily <br />available. Mr. Basich stated they are and advised of the factory locations. <br /> <br />Mr. Basich noted that with wood structures there is not a lot of color choice (green treated which <br />greys nicely). <br /> <br />Mr. Boos added that in terms of the City's experience, the wood structures receive no more <br />vandalism than metal structures. He stated staffwill survey the neighborhood to determine what they <br />want in terms of play events. He asked what questions should be asked of the neighborhood with <br />regard to wood versus metal. <br /> <br />Commissioner Droegemueller asked if there is a safety issue either way.
