Recommendation:

Essentially, these new guidelines call for a proactive management program, which requires
seeking out diseased trees rather than a reactive approach in which Staff responds to calls from
concerned residents. This represents a drastic deviation from Ramsey's management approach to
date. However, to remain eligible for cost share funds that help residents (and really the
community as a whole) manage this issue, it will be necessary to implement this more aggressive
approach. Considering the cultural and financial value that is associated with oak trees, and the
fact that there is an ordinance in place currently that complies with the standards of the new
guidelines, it seems prudent that the City become more proactive in its oak wilt management
efforts.

EPB Action

Motion by Board member and seconded by Board member to
recommend that the City implement a more proactive oak wilt management program that not
only complies with the new standards set forth by the state, but also ensures that Ramsey is
remains eligible for future grant funds, if available, for effective management.

EPB: 4/2/07
