PC CASE # 0%
CONSIDER APPROVING AN EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION PROGRAM
By: Givonna Reed Kone, Human Resources Manager
Background:
In the spring of 2006, the City Council authorized staff to design an employee recognition
program that would replace the "Employee of the Year" award that had been given out in
previous years. It was the City Council's intent that staff develop a recognition program
that is fair, highly visible and consistent.
To that end, staff proposes that the City Council consider approving a two - tiered
employee recognition program. Tier one would consist of years of service awards. At
five year intervals, employees would choose gifts, such as clothing, clocks and
electronics, from a catalog. The value of the gifts would be $5 per year of service. The
gifts selected by employees would be presented to them at the Employee Appreciation
Breakfast that is held annually in April.
Tier two would consist of employees nominating co- workers for outstanding service in
the areas of innovation, team work and customer service. Winners of the outstanding
service awards will be chosen by the city administrator and presented to the City Council.
Employees who are chosen as outstanding service providers will also select a gift from
the catalog described above. The gifts would be valued at $50 per employee.
Outstanding service awards will be presented at the annual holiday parry.
Funding Source
Costs for the Employee Recognition Program will vary from year -to -year; however,
continuation of the program will be contingent upon funding. If approved by the City
Council, the Employee Recognition Program will be funded by the Miscellaneous
Operating Supplies fund (Employee Appreciation Event) in the City Council budget. Any
amount exceeding what is available in the 2007 City Council budget will be paid from the
Miscellaneous Operating Supplies fund in the Administrative Services Budget. For 2007,
the approximate cost of the Employee Recognition Program will be $900.
Staff Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the Personnel Committee consider recommending that the City
Council approve the Employee Recognition Program as outlined above.
PC: 4/24/07
G:W dministration\H umanResources\Trainin6AEmployee Recognition\staff report -- consider approval of ee recognition program 424- 07.doc
