Consider Utilizing Paid -On -Call Firefighters for Fire Code Inspections
Fire Chief Kapler stated staff is looking at this proposal to utilize paid -on -call firefighters as a
bridge to help staff accomplish what needs to be done within the community. The first comment
he hears when discussing inspections is that building is down, so inspections should be down.
This is true for new construction, but fire code inspections are the exception to that rule. The
Fire Code requires periodic inspections on existing buildings. Per the City's business
registrations there are 483 different businesses in town, and it is the goal to get to each of those
businesses annually. Fire Marshal Streich has prioritized the businesses by hazards and some are
visited more often. In some businesses the inspection will find something extremely dangerous,
Personnel Committee / April 10, 2007
