CASE #
SKATE PARK PLANNING -DISCUSS YOUTH INVOLVEMENT
By: Mark Riverblood, Park's Supervisor
Background:
At the Commission's April meeting, the planning process for the Skate Park proposed for 2008
within the Parks Capital Improvement Program continued. Below are the planning tasks in
italics that have occurred.
o January '07: Planning begins; review skate parks in general, identify general considerations and
timeline for planning process.. Become familiar with Roller Device Ordinance (prohibiting
skateboarding etc. in certain areas of Town Center). (Completed)
o February: Review pros and cons of park locations for the interim location; identify scope of
project (E.g. Tier 1 or Tier 2,-BMX uses etc.). Discuss user demographics. (Completed)
o .March: Review the undeveloped west side of Alpine as an interim skate park site. -and discuss
sight-line and access issues on Alpine Drive. (Complete)
o April: Receive presentation by local vendor/designer(s); prepare draft list of amenities and
factors crucial to success of project (E.g. proximity of restrooms, litter maintenance concerns,
minimum separation from residential units and other site considerations). (Complete =concept
plan reviewed)
o Discuss youth involvement in planning.
Observations:
Throughout the skate park planning process; the Commission has discussed a desire to involve
youth skateboarders in any number of aspects leading up to a facility -and most notably,
selection of components or design issues. These could be individuals located by `a call' for
participants, through the boarder's club at the middle school or perhaps through advertising as
part of the Lion's Picnic demonstration featuring `professional boarders'-later this spring.
It should be noted. that one youth in her early teens (from Burns Township) inquired what could
be done to initiate a skate park in Ramsey. She was sent information and also invited to attend
the May Commission meeting with any other interested youth. The purpose of this case is to
generally discuss ideas for youth involvement, define the scope of this potential activity. There
is no action required.
Commission Action:
Based upon discussion
Reviewed by:
Interim City Administrator
Public Works Director/Principal Engineer
Civil Engineer II
P&R: 05/10/07
5
