BUilding design should <br />respond to Minnesota's summer sun and <br />winter snow With eaves, trellises and other <br />overhangs. Entries, .particularly the front <br />door, should be generously protected by a <br />porch. Principal rooms should .have <br />windows, whenever possible, on.two walls <br />to provide balanced daYligh~ing, and <br />facilitate natural cooling and ventilation. <br />Homes should be oriented so a majority of <br />primary living spaces receive direct sunlight, <br />and incorporate overhangs, awnings or <br />trellises which allow the low winter sun to <br />penetrate the unit, while blocking the high <br />summer sun. Roof pitches of at least 4:12 <br />are appropriate for Minnesota's snow loads. <br /> <br />Ground Floor elevation. Building <br />foundations should be elevated above the <br />adjacent grade level.
