CASE #

PROPOSED ORDINANCE TO AMEND CITY CODE CHAPTER 8
(BUILDING AND HOUSING)
By: Community Development Director Sylvia Frolik

Background:

Section 8.0 l of Chapter 8 in the City Code calls out which version of the State Building Code is
being administered and enforced. Each time the State adopts a new version, our Code has to be
amended to reference the correct version. The City has been notified that this month the
Minnesota Building Codes and Standards Division will be converting from the Uniform Building
Code to the International Building Code. Municipalities that enforce the State Building Code
need to update their building code to reflect the change.

Notification:

No specific notification is required to amend Chapter 8, Building Code.

Observations:

The State Department of Administration, Building Codes and Standards Division, has supplied
cities with model ordinances to implement the changes.~ One model identifies each specific
section of the code being adopted and would have to be amended from time to time as the State
Code changes. The second alternative is a self-perpetuating ordinance intended to always reflect
the most current edition of the State Building Code.

Recommendation:

City Staff recommends adoption of the self-perpetuating ordinance. The ordinance is enclOsed
for review and consideration.

Council Action:

Motion by and seconded by
#03-__ adopting the Minnesota State Building Code.

to introduce Ordinance

Review Checklist:

City Administrator
Building Official
City Attorney
Finance Officer

CC: 03/11/03

5'

-153-
