J

CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION

Topic Report: City Administrator Search: Selection of Finalists

By: Givonna Reed Kone, Human Resources Manager

Background

Waters-Oldani received more than 50 applications in response to the city administrator job
announcement. Consultant Andrea Sims presented the city council with a pool of 13 applicants
from which she recommended that 7-10 semi-finalists be selected. The city council selected nine
semi-finalists to be interviewed by the search firm: candidates 1,2,3,4,6,9, 12, 13 and 14.

Under separate cover, staff is providing a list of pros and cons for each of the nine candidates
interviewed by Waters-Oldani Executive Recruitment. At the June 19th work session, Andrea
Sims of Waters-Oldani will be joining the city council by conference call for a discussion
regarding the information she gathered in her interviews. After this discussion, the city council
will select 4-6 individuals to interview with the city council on-site on July 12 & 13.

Currently, the names ofthe semi-finalists are private information under the Minnesota
Government Data Practices Act. Upon being selected for on-site interviews with the city council,
candidates' names will become public information.

For the May 29'h work session, council members were given three-ring binders containing
resumes and candidate questionnaires. If you did not return your binder to me, please bring it
with you to the June 19'h work session. You may need to reference the information in the
binder. (Councilmembers Strommen, Elvig & Olson)

Next Steps

Once the city council has selected the finalists (June 19th), the council will be provided with a
profile (i.e., information on management style, salary requirements, background check results, etc.)
for each finalist. The intent is that the city council will use this information, along with candidates'
responses to interview questions, to select a final candidate.

Attachments under separate cover:

. Pros/cons for each semi-finalist
. Binder containing applicant resumes and questionnaires for Mayor Gamec,
Councilmembers Dehen, Jeffrey, and Look. (Others should have the binder in their
possession.)

. CCWS: June 19,2007
