The costs of this additional effort would be increased labor, fuel and salt. That amount is
estimated to be approximately $4,500 (for an average snowfall season), with $3,000 for labor,
$1,000 for salt, and $500 for fuel. A portion of these costs may be offset by reducing the effort
to clean these arterial streets which are currently incorporated into the seven major routes.

Recommendation:

The recommendation regarding adding a sixth cul-de-sac route via contracting will be made by
the Street Supervisor at the meeting. Staff is recommending adding an evening shift to keep
arterial streets passable during the storm at an estimated cost of $4,500. If the Council concurs,
staff should be directed to modify the existing Snow and Ice Control Policy accordingly.

Committee Action:

Review and make recommendations for amendment to the Snow and Ice Control Policy.

Reviewed by:

City Engineer
Acting City Administrator
Public Works Supervisor
Finance Officer
Fire Chief
Police Chief

RB: 10/11/97

/jmt
