Recreational fires are to
be used for recreation, cooking or
ceremonial purposes. Recreational
burning is not to be used for disposal.
Recreational fires must
consist of clean dry wood, producing
little detectable smoke, odor or soot
beyond the property line; conducted
with an adult tending the fire at all
times. Respecting weather condi-
tions, neighbors, burning bans and
air quality so that nuisance, health or
safety hazards will not be created.
The Ramsey Fire Department
suggests a 50 foot minimum distance
between the fire site and any structure
or vehicle. If unable to obtain this

Public Safety

Recreational Burning
Regulations

distance, in no circumstance shall
a fire be closer than 25 feet to any
structure or vehicle.
Burning times are Monday
through Friday from 6:00 pm to 6:00
am. Saturday, Sunday and national
holidays from 12:00 noon to 6:00 am.
A recreational fire site is an
area of no more than a 3 foot diam-
eter measured from the inside of a
fire ring or non-combustible border.
Burning barrels are prohibited.
Disposal of larger quanti-
ties of brush, trees, etc. requires an
"Open Burning Permit" available
through the fire department. A fee is
charged for the permit. Any person

Outdoor Warning Sirens

Sirens are the most effective
method to warn the population at
large of dangerous conditions in the
shortest amount of time. People may
be outdoors at ball games, in their
yard, or anywhere else where they are
not in contact with the normal news
media outlets such as radio, TV or
local public address systems.
However, one of the most
common misconceptions about
outdoor warning sirens is that they
will alert you to dangerous conditions
even when you're indoors. While
some people may live close enough
to hear the sirens indoors, this is not
their purpose. Sirens are designed to
advise people who are outside that a
hazard exists. Newer structures are
insulated better and are more likely
to keep sound out. Sirens cannot be
made louder to penetrate buildings
because doing so would pose a dan-
ger to the hearing of people who are

outdoors. A battery operated radio or
TV is the best way to stay advised of
possible dangerous conditions when
indoors.
Sirens in Anoka County
are tested on the first Wednesday of
each month at 1 :00 p.m. The first
test is comprised of a steady signal
for approximately one minute. A
second test follows, which consists
of a series of short blasts or a waver-
ing (warbling) tone. The second test
also lasts approximately one minute.
In an actual emergency, sirens will
sound for longer than one minute, be-
tween three to five minutes, and then
will be repeated when the emergency
has passed.
Any questions or concerns
regarding the purpose of the outdoor
warning system can be directed to the
Ramsey Police Department at 763-
427-6812.

~

conducting an open bum without the
necessary permit shall be required to
extinguish said fire and may be cited
under Ramsey City Ordinance #92-03
(a misdemeanor) and may be charged
the cost of fire suppression services
from the city of Ramsey Fire Depart-
ment at the rate of $300 per hour plus
any other costs incurred by the city.
Please call the Fire Depart-
ment at 763-427-4452 if you have
any questions or concerns.

Ramsey
Seniors

The Ramsey Seniors Club
met on August 23, 2007, with over
40 members in attendance.
