Recycling
Information
for 2008

Next year will mark the start
of the third year of a five year curb-
side recycling contract with ACE
Solid Waste. Beginning January 1,
the recycling rate per household per
month will be $2.95, and as usual,
will be billed on a quarterly basis
through Connexus Energy. Remem-
ber, with the simple sort system, all
acceptable materials can be placed
directly in the recycling cart. Accept-
able materials include paper, card-
board, boxboard (cereal, chip, and
cake boxes), food and beverage glass
containers, aluminum and steel cans,
and plastic containers with "necks"
marl(ed with a #1 or #2.
If you have general questions
about Ramsey's recycling program,
please contact Chris Anderson at
763-433-9905 or visit the website at
www.ci.ramsey.mn.us. If you have
questions about whether a specific
product is accepted for curbside col-
lection, please contact ACE Solid
Waste at 763-427-3110 or by email at
s ervi ce@acesolidwaste. com.
~~-
/~ '
/- ~

Recycling Topics

~

General Information on
Recycling Plastic

Over the years,
recycling has become
more commonplace
and less complicated.
However, plastics still
remain confusing as
far as what is and is
not recyclable. Plastic
products each have
a number on them,
ranging from 1- 7 (a
resin code) within the
chasing arrows symbol,
which represents the type of chemical
compound used to make the product.
However, that does not, nor accord-
ing to the plastics industry was it ever
intended to, indicate that the product
is recyclable.
Further confusing matters,
plastics with the same resin code can
be manufactured differently, with
bottles being "blow-molded" and
tubs being "injection molded". The
difference between the two methods
creates additional confusion because
different additives are used in each
molding process that cannot be mixed
during the recycling process. This
means that not even all products with
the same resin code can be recycled.
Not only are these the most
widespread l(ind of plastics, they are

I
I I

also the only types that
currently have both
the supply and marl(et
conditions to mal(e re-
cycling feasible. The
acceptable types in
Ramsey are common
to many other com-
munities as well. The
containers should be
rinsed out and placed
in the recycling cart
along with all the other
acceptable materials. There is no
need to remove labels from the plastic
containers.
Containers for products like
pesticides, herbicides and automo-
tive products, regardless of the type
of plastic, should be placed in the
garbage after the contents have been
used or disposed of properly.
If you have general questions
about Ramsey's recycling program,
please contact Chris Anderson at
763-433-9905 or visit the website at
www.ci.ramsey.mn.us.
