/ 6CASE # o

CONTINUED DISCUSSION OF POLICY FOR
PROCESSING TRAFFIC CALMING REQUESTS
By: Steve Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

This case is a continuation of the discussion initiated at the July Road and Bridge Committee
meeting on policies and procedures for handling traffic calming requests. At the August meeting,
the consensus was that the following process would be followed in handling such requests:

1) Requests for various traffic calming measures shall be considered only if made in writing.

2)

Each request shall be reviewed by a staff committee comprised of the City Engineer, the
Public Works Supervisor, and the Chief of Police, or their designated representatives.

3)

A written summary of the staff committee's findings shall be transmitted to the Road and
Bridge Committee

4)

Following review by the Road and Bridge Committee, the person making the request shall
be advised in writing of the determination.

Also considered at the August meeting was a listing of eight commonly requested traffic calming
measures. Specific policies should be developed to guide staff on these requests. I am again
attaching background information to assist the committee in developing a rational policy.

Committee Action:

Review each of the eight individual traffic calming strategies above and suggest policy direction,
including the assignment of costs.

Reviewed by:

City Engineer
Police Chief
Public Works Supervisor
City Administrator
Finance Officer

R&B: 09/09/96

/jmt
